With the ongoing pandemic, offices, schools and colleges have shifted to our homes. This has led to rising demand for fast cellular connectivity. When 5G was announced, it was considered to be a big step towards faster connectivity. However, the 5G rollout was pushed to 2022 for India, but now Minister of Communication Ashwini Vaishnav has made a bold claim saying that India will get 6G technology by the end of 2023 or early 2024.

Although this seems like a far-fetched possibility, if it happens then this can bring India among the front lines of the game. This will lead to improvements in various fields like internet speeds. India is also planning to adopt and implement home-grown technologies when it comes to the growth and spread of 5G across the country.

Home-grown 6G networks by 2023?

Minister of Communication Ashwini Vaishnav, while speaking on ‘New Technology and the Green Economy: Two Trends Shaping a New India?’ made some comments on 5G and 6G coming to India. He also commented about the scientists and engineers currently invested in the projects being provided with the necessary go-ahead and permissions to realize their efforts.

“6G development has already started. That will be seen somewhere in the timeframe 2024 or 2023-end. That is the direction in which we are going. We will have designed in India telecom software for running the networks, manufactured in India telecom equipment, served in India telecom networks which can go global,” said the minister.

The ministry also hopes to gain a stronghold of the upcoming 5G boom in India by promotion and use of indigenously developed 5G technology. 5G timeline has been set in such a way that it should roll out by the 3rd quarter of 2022.

“A reference has been made to TRAI for 5G spectrum auctions. They have already started the consultation process. The process should end somewhere in the February-March time frame in the coming year. Then the auction process will be in Q2 of the calendar year 2022,” the minister added.
