Remember how the European Union forced Apple to get rid of the Lightning Port from its iPhones? Well, it turns out that the Indian government is going to issue a similar advisory. In order to standardize the USB-C port across smartphones and laptops, the government will make it compulsory for all manufacturers to include the port on all devices.

Smartphones To Feature Only USB-C Ports By 2025, Laptops To Follow In 2026

According to a report by Livemint, the Indian government will issue an advisory to include a USB-C port on all smartphones by June 2025. While the government will instruct smartphone manufacturers to replace the micro-USB ports on their smartphones by next year, laptops will follow suit by 2026. Unfortunately, the government won’t make USB-C compulsory on devices like wearables or wireless audio speakers.

The decision to replace other ports with USB-C will benefit both the environment and customers. Once smartphones and laptops start featuring the same charging port, users won’t have to carry different chargers and cables. This, in turn, will lead to a reduction in the e-waste generated by faulty wires or chargers that end up in a garbage dump.

Given that some of the most affordable smartphones already feature USB-C charging ports, the move shouldn’t have an adverse effect on the industry. Yes, the prices of the entry-level models (below Rs. 10,000) that feature a micro USB charging port could go up by a few hundred rupees, as a USB-C is slightly expensive for companies. Moreover, the move should benefit the environment and Indian consumers in the long run.
