Ever since the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max arrived, people have reported overheating issues that have left tech enthusiasts baffled. Apple acknowledged the issues and took no time releasing iOS 17.0.3 with the release note saying “addresses an issue that may cause iPhone to run warmer than expected”. Seems like the update works with many reports coming in giving out positive reviews of the new update so here’s more about it.

Did iOS 17.0.3 resolve the iPhone 15 Pro overheating issues?

According to the folks at ZDNet, the iPhone 15 Pro Max running on iOS 17 took a turn for the worse, lighting up at 107.1° F when connecting to a 35W charging brick. For context, most iPhones and Android devices lie in the ballpark of 80-95° F in temperature making the iPhone 15 Pro Max a seemingly different beast.

After upgrading to iOS 17.0.3, things began to change with the higher temperature being 93.9° F which is a huge improvement in thermal management. According to Apple, there are no hardware issues on the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max instead, it’s a bug causing the phone to overheat. Additionally, some third-party apps like Instagram and Uber are spiking the temperature on the device as well.

Possible Performance Bump Post iOS 17.0.3 Update

According to a Chinese reviewer “Ah Zheng Is Very Hard”, his iPhone 15 Pro Max made improvements in performance after iOS 17.0.3 was rolled out. With iOS 17.0.2, the unit scored 27,163 points, and with the upgrade, it reached 27,381 points.

Similarly, the FPS on Honor of Kings and similar titles reached an average of 116.9FPS after the update. For comparison, it reached a max of 105.4FPS when running on iOS 17.0.2. The temperature on the device dropped around 0.6° C on the front and 1° C on the back post the update.

There’s a flip side too

According to a graphic designer based in Madrid, Spain – Gabriel Suchowolski, he upgraded from iPhone 13 Pro Max to iPhone 15 Pro Max. He started noticing overheating issues when playing heavy games or taking long calls. The camera app would cause the region around the rear camera unit to warm up more than the rest of the body.

Suchowolski reported that his phone reached 42° C or 107.6° after iOS 17.0.3 was released. He even noticed screen burn-in issues with his unit and reported the same to AppleCare+ which is currently pending any update. Another user from the UK – Sam Harman, noticed his iPhone 15 Pro Max unit started overheating after upgrading to iOS 17.0.3 which was supposed to fix the issue.
