Maruti Suzuki is all set to launch the new Grand Vitara in the form of an SUV that will launch on July 20. To date, Maruti has only Brezza which can be categoried as an SUV, but things are about to change. Last year, Hyundai was the leading SUV seller in India, while Maruti ranked 5th. This has led to Grand Vitara being a crucial product for Maruti if they want to strengthen their hold in the SUV market.

Reports claim that the Maruti Grand Vitara will come with new technologies that will allow it to go toe-toe with the Korean diesel SUVs. How true is this claim remains to be found.

Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara

Maruti has decided to bring back the Grand Vitara as the name is well known as one of the finest SUV makers by the company. Since the name enjoys a rich legacy, and the features associated with the name are in sync with the new SUV, the match was found to be an apt one. Maruti will enter into the compact SUV segment with this launch, the sector that is currently dominated by Creta and Kia Seltos.

Talking about their launch, Shashank Srivastava, Senior Executive Director, Maruti Suzuki India, LTD. said, “I am sure, we will go up in the rankings but how far and how quickly that happens depends on the performance of the Grand Vitara. This is why we are looking forward to seeing how our product fares so that we can move up and compete with the top brands in the segment.”

The new Grand Vitara will also mark Maruti’s entry into the strong hybrid system for the first time. It will use a battery and electric motor in addition to the engine, which will not only improve fuel efficiency but lower emissions as well. The only issue is that the Grand Vitara is still the only petrol model, which can go against it.

Clearing his stand on this niggle, Srivastava said, “In the overall market, diesel has come down from 58% to 17%. Also since prices between petrol and diesel are so close there is no big advantage now of having a diesel engine. In the SUV segment, people prefer diesel engines not because of economic reasoning, but due to higher torque. The reason why the mid SUV segment has a large percentage of diesel is that there is no strong petrol variant available that provides the necessary combination of power with high fuel efficiency. The Grand Vitara Hybrid will change this scenario in the mis SUV segment.”

The Grand Vitara will operate in the EV mode most of the time. While driving in the city, it will run on a battery giving lower emissions and better fuel efficiency. This EV will be self-charging and it will start with flat torque and offer a smooth drive. The petrol engine and electric motor will give a smoother and more powerful drive.

The prices for the all-new Grand Vitara will be revealed later on, but the car is expected to give great value for money to the buyers. The company is making all possible efforts to make the new product successful and thus the pricing is also expected to be competitive and aggressive. Some sources claim that the price will be 9.5 lakhs.

Although the car will have a tough fight against the Korean siblings, but Maruti is confident that this all-new Grand Vitara with withstand every rival that comes it’s way. Although the launch date has been finalized, but Maruti is yet to begin production in August so the price announcement is also expected soon.
