MasterChef India hasn’t even premiered yet, but it is already dominating the Indian internet. On December 11, the show quietly slipped back into the zeitgeist before shooting straight to the top of India’s trending queries. The reason isn’t just nostalgia; it’s a massive programming shake-up.

Sony Entertainment Television has confirmed that MasterChef India Season 9 will officially replace Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC) in the prime-time slot this January.

The network is betting big on a “cultural reset,” bringing back the show’s three most recognizable faces i.e., Kunal Kapur, Ranveer Brar, and Vikas Khanna, and pivoting to a fiercely patriotic culinary theme.

Here is everything you need to know about the release date, the new format, and why the teaser is going viral.

MasterChef India Season 9 Release Date & Where to Watch

If you are looking to mark your calendar, here are the confirmed details:

  • Premiere Date: January 5, 2026
  • Time: Monday to Friday at 9:00 PM IST
  • TV Channel: Sony Entertainment Television
  • Streaming: SonyLIV (Digital Premiere)

By taking the 9 PM slot, MasterChef is stepping into the shoes of Amitabh Bachchan’s KBC, signalling that Sony sees this season not just as a reality show, but as its flagship daily driver for 2026.

MasterChef India Season 9 Theme is “India on the Front Foot”

Season 9 is ditching the generic “tasty food” tropes for a specific narrative backbone: “Desh Front Foot Par Chal Raha Hai” (The country is moving forward on the front foot).

The viral promo captures this shift with a single, evocative line:

“Jab desh itna aage badh raha hai, toh desh ka swaad peeche kyun rahe?” (When the country is progressing so much, why should the country’s taste be left behind?)

Expect dishes that spotlight regional identity and hometown nostalgia. The show seems to be pivoting from “competition cooking” to “cultural storytelling,” using food to track India’s pace of progress. It’s a smart pivot that aligns the show with the current national mood.

The “OG” Judges Reunite

with the Master Chef season 9 is the OG judge Chef Kunal Kapur makes return to the show.

While Vikas Khanna and Ranveer Brar have been staples of recent seasons, the chemistry of the original trio has been missing. Vikas Khanna’s recent Instagram post all but confirmed the emotional weight of this reunion, calling Kapur “the OG judge” who helped shape the franchise’s identity.

Khanna described the reunion as “the band getting back together,” promising that the chemistry, often the secret sauce of reality TV, is back in full force.

MasterChef India Season 9 feels both familiar and newly ambitious exactly the kind of formula that keeps Indian reality TV humming.
