OnePlus announced a 120Hz 2K+ OLED display at its 2020 Screen Technology Meeting held in China. Hours prior to the event, OnePlus CEO shared the progress in R&D on the 120Hz screen. He extolled it as the company’s “new breakthroughs after adding 90Hz fluid screen to lead the industry”.
This comes in the wake of CES 2020, wherein Pete Lau had affirmed their next major phones viz. OnePlus 8 series will support a 120Hz refresh rate. He even touted it to be “the best smartphone display in 2020.”

Technically, the display is manufactured by Samsung. However, OnePlus claims it has partnered with the South Korean giant to iron out the animations including the navigational gestures.
Specs-wise, this will be a QHD+ OLED panel just like the OnePlus 7T Pro but with a higher 120Hz refresh rate. Now, at the event, the brand emphasized the use of custom MEMC (Motion Estimation/ Motion Compensation) technology to buttress the frame rate in videos to hit 120Hz. In other words, we would see interpolation in practice.

OnePlus also brags the most accurate color accuracy and 4096-level of automatic brightness control on the device, with the peak lux hitting 1000 nits while playing HDR content. Rest, the display will reportedly support a 240Hz Touch Sampling Rate, 10-bit deep color gamut, and a Minimum Perceptible Color Difference (MPCD), or Just Noticeable Color Difference (JNCD) rating of <0.8.
Since the OnePlus 7 Pro (review) was in limelight for its 90Hz OLED panel, the brand seems to be betting heavy yet again on the display specs. Now, neither the panel’s from OnePlus labs nor the screaming 120Hz a new thing in the market. We have seen phones such as Asus ROG Phone 2 (review) with the same refresh rate before. Hence OnePlus needs to cook something more to lure the cash out of customers’ pockets.

OnePlus 8 series: What to Expect?
This time around we might even see a lite trim variant, thus totaling up to 3 OnePlus 8s. That is OnePlus 8, OnePlus 8 Pro and a OnePlus 8 Lite.
