The Chinese smartphone brand OnePlus has released its first AI Eraser, a tool that can intelligently substitute unwanted objects with contextually appropriate elements. The tool allows users to make high-quality edits on the go, with the comfort of their smartphone. It marks the company’s foray into integrating generative AI into its core smartphone experience. Along with the new tool, the brand also promises the arrival of OnePlus AI, a suite of AI-driven smartphone features that will be available later this year.

What Is The OnePlus AI Eraser?

Remember Google’s Magic Eraser? Pixel 7 or Pixel 8 users should be aware of this image-editing tool, which helps remove distracting elements from an image. For instance, the tool can remove strangers from the background or help clear the sky. Samsung’s Galaxy S24 series also has the feature. The OnePlus AI Eraser is similar to Google’s Magic Eraser, except it is based on the company’s proprietary large language model. “AI Eraser represents the first step in our vision to liberate user creativity through AI and revolutionize the future of photo editing,” says OnePlus.

Utilizing image detection algorithms, AI Eraser helps users select and remove unwanted objects in their images right from the Photo Gallery. All users have to do is highlight specific objects, such as pedestrians, trash, or imperfections in the picture, and the underlying AI automatically generates and fills the area with the correct elements that blend in the background (suiting the image’s overall style). Although the company claims the results look flawless, we have yet to test it.

When Will The OnePlus AI Eraser Be Available For Everyone?

The AI Eraser feature will be available to OnePlus devices starting in April 2024. Initially, the brand will roll out the feature to the latest flagship models, including the OnePlus 12 and the OnePlus 12R. The feature will also roll out to the OnePlus 11, OnePlus Open, and the brand’s latest mid-range smartphone, the OnePlus Nord CE 4. The company also plans to release the feature for more models in the near future, as it asks users to refer to “subsequent announcements for more supported devices and specific update details.”

“AI Eraser is the result of a substantial R&D investment that has been undertaken with a commitment to ensuring the accuracy and reliability of AI-generated content,” mentions OnePlus in its official community post. The company also adds that its proprietary LLM is trained on a vast dataset that allows it to comprehend complex scenes through its advanced visual understanding.
