In July 2024, OnePlus introduced the Pro variant of its third-generation Nord Buds. Following this, the company has now released the standard version of the OnePlus Nord Buds 3, designed as an entry-level true wireless stereo (TWS) option suitable for users of all ages. The Nord Buds 3 comes equipped with a range of features, including Active Noise Cancellation (ANC), Dual Connectivity, BassWave 2.0, AI Clear Calls, and an impressive 43 hours of battery life, among others. The question remains: do these specifications deliver satisfactory real-world performance for these budget-friendly earbuds? Let’s explore this further.

OnePlus Nord Buds 3 Review: Design & Fit

The OnePlus Nord Buds 3 case features a design reminiscent of the Pro variant released in July 2024. Available in Melodic White and Harmonic Grey, I received the white version for my review. The case exudes a premium feel with its sleek vertical design and glossy finish. While it resists smudges and fingerprints, it does show scratches quite prominently, which is a drawback. The case can be easily opened with one hand and closed securely with an audible click. The front displays the OnePlus logo and an LED indicator, while the bottom houses the USB-C port and pairing button. Weighing in at 46.2g, the case is lightweight and convenient for pocket transport.

The earbuds themselves exhibit a high-end appearance. They have a smooth texture and provide comfort for extended wear. Designed to fit securely in the ears, they feature a waterdrop-shaped stem that enhances their aesthetic appeal. Each bud is marked with an L or R and weighs just 4.2 grams, making them feel almost weightless. With an IP55 rating, the earbuds are suitable for use during workouts without concern. However, it is disappointing that the case lacks an IP rating.

The third-generation Nord Buds feature Bluetooth 5.4 and Google Fast Pair technology, making the connection process to your smartphone remarkably straightforward. To connect, simply activate Bluetooth on your device and open the case containing the Nord Buds 3. The front LED will illuminate green, and a pairing option will appear on your device. If this does not occur, you can manually initiate pairing by pressing the button located at the bottom of the case for the first time. After this initial setup, the Buds will automatically connect to your smartphone whenever you open the case, provided that Bluetooth is enabled on your phone. The Bluetooth 5.4 technology ensures a fast and seamless connection.

 The OnePlus Nord Buds 3 is compatible with the Hey Melody app, which displays the battery status of each earbud and the charging case immediately upon opening. Users can select their preferred Noise Control settings, choosing between Noise Cancellation and Transparency mode. Additional features include Sound Master EQ, Game Mode, Dual Connection, and a Find My Earbuds function, among others. The app also allows for customization of touch controls on both earbuds. Notably, there is no login required, and the app connected effortlessly as soon as the charging case was opened.

 The OnePlus Nord Buds 3 comes equipped with a Dual Connection feature, enabling simultaneous connections to two devices and facilitating easy switching between them. However, I found that the transition was not always smooth. For instance, while I was working on my laptop, I needed to take a call, but the earbuds did not automatically switch to my phone, causing me to miss the call. This can be quite inconvenient. I hope that future updates will enhance this functionality.

Find My Earbuds is a useful tool for locating lost earbuds. The application allows users to play a sound to help find the missing buds. Each earbud features three gesture controls: single tap, double tap, and triple tap. Users can customize the actions associated with each gesture through the app. Additionally, by touching and holding the stem of the earbud, users can toggle between different noise control modes. A long press can also be utilized to adjust the volume, enabling listeners to manage sound levels directly from their earbuds.

The OnePlus Nord Buds 3 features impressive 12.4mm drivers designed to provide a professional-grade audio experience. Additionally, they incorporate BassWave 2.0 technology, catering to those who prefer a bass-heavy sound. The overall audio quality of these earbuds is exceptional. Whether enjoying bass-driven tracks like “Tauba Tauba” by Bad News or “Akhiyaan Gulaab” from TBMAUJ, or more tranquil tunes such as “Haan Ke Haan” by Maharaj and “Sajni re” from Laapata Ladies, the vocals remained clear and distinct, never overshadowed by the accompanying instruments or beats. The listening experience was both immersive and captivating. Users can also access the Master EQ through the app, which offers three distinct presets: Balanced, Serenade, and Bass. Each mode is tailored to enhance specific audio elements, with Serenade emphasizing the artist’s vocals, Balanced providing a harmonious mix of bass and treble, and Bass delivering a powerful rhythmic experience.

Another significant aspect to consider is Active Noise Cancellation, which has become essential for modern audio devices. The OnePlus Nord Buds 3 offers a 32dB ANC level, designed to minimize unwanted sounds before they reach the listener. In my experience using the earbuds in a bustling outdoor setting, they did reduce the sounds of horns and engines, but these noises remained quite noticeable even with ANC activated. However, in indoor environments, they effectively block out sounds from fans and air conditioners.

 AI Clear Calls significantly improved the calling experience in loud environments, providing clear audio for both myself and the person on the other end. Additionally, the OnePlus Nord Buds 3 features a transparency mode that keeps you aware of your surroundings without disruption. This was particularly useful while I was listening to music at a clinic, as it enabled me to remain alert and not miss my name being called.

OnePlus Nord Buds 3 Review: Battery Life & Charging

 The OnePlus Nord Buds 3 comes equipped with a 440mAh charging case, while each earbud contains a 58mAh battery. According to OnePlus, when active noise cancellation (ANC) is disabled, the earbuds can provide up to 43 hours of playback time on a single charge with the case. The earbuds alone are said to deliver 12 hours of use without ANC. In practical scenarios, users experienced approximately 9.5 to 10 hours of battery life with ANC off, and when using the case, the total usage time reached around 39 to 40 hours. Although these figures are slightly below the manufacturer’s claims, a nearly 40-hour battery life is commendable for a true wireless stereo (TWS) product priced at Rs. 2299. Additionally, I found that I did not need to recharge the case for 2.5 days, making it convenient for on-the-go use.

Moreover, there is fast charging as well. Charging the case for 10 minutes offers a playback time of up to 10-11 hours with ANC off and volume being 50%. This helps when one doesn’t have much time to recharge but needs the TWS to be with them while traveling.

While they lack some high-end features like wear detection and active noise cancellation may not meet all expectations, OnePlus has delivered a solid product for a price under 2500. If you are looking for reliable earbuds for everyday use without a significant financial investment, the OnePlus Nord Buds 3 could be an excellent choice.
