OnePlus Open Specs

OnePlus Open sports a 7.82-inch AMOLED panel with 2K resolution, 120Hz refresh rate, and a 2800 nits peak brightness. There is a 6.1-inch cover display as well that is an AMOLED screen with 2K resolution, and 120Hz refresh rate. The foldable is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset with 16GB RAM and 512GB storage. It runs Android 13-based OxygenOS 13.2 and packs a 4805mAh battery under the hood with 67W wired fast charging.

The cover screen flaunts a 32MP camera while there is a 20MP camera inside as well for video calls. The rear camera setup includes a 48MP primary lens, a 64MP 3x telephoto zoom lens, and a 48MP ultrawide camera.

Connectivity options include 5G, WiFi 7, Bluetooth 5.3, alert slider, USB-C port, and more. The foldable comes with Dolby Atmos support and a side-mounted fingerprint reader as well.

Now, let us have a look at 3 reasons to buy and 3 to not buy OnePlus Open

Reasons to Buy OnePlus Open

1. Top-notch Display

OnePlus Open features a top-notch display with vibrant colors and good contrast. The AMOLED panels offer a smooth experience and save battery life as well because the refresh rate is adaptive between 1Hz to 120Hz, depending on the content. The device has the brightest panel in the market with a peak brightness of 2800 nits. This allows content to be visible in harsh sunlight. The cover display with a size of 6.1 inches is very functional as well. It is protected by a ceramic guard and unlike Galaxy Z Fold 5’s cover panel, most apps work efficiently on the OnePlus Open cover display. It is an edge-to-edge panel for an immersive experience.

2. Good Build Quality

Build quality is one of the most important aspects of a foldable phone. OnePlus Open doesn’t disappoint in this department. While most foldables come with a noticeable crease in the middle of the main screen, OnePlus Open offers a near-crease-less main display. The foldable comes with a Flexion Hinge design that has minimized the weight as well as the crease.

The Hinge is also claimed to be super powerful and efficient. OnePlus says it has reduced the hinge components to 69 which is why OnePlus Open weighs similar to other flagship smartphones. The hinge can retain a 90-degree angle without wobbling and claims to give 547 folds per day for 5 years, which means a million folds. It comes in 2 gorgeous colors and looks like a small notebook when held in hand.

3. Performance & Battery

In terms of general performance, OnePlus Open gives no reasons to complain. It is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset and as expected performance is fast and efficient. It comes with ample RAM and ROM which leads to fast reading and writing speeds.

OnePlus Open packs an 80W adapter inside the box that provides 67W fast charging speed. It charges around 40% in 20 minutes. Moreover, the brand is still bundling a charger inside the box, unlike some other leading brands that have stopped offering one.

Reasons to Not Buy OnePlus Open

1. Cameras are a Mixed Bag

The OnePlus Open’s camera setup looks very impressive on paper. The foldable sports a 48MP primary Sony LYT-T808 camera, a 48MP ultra-wide-angle lens, and a 64MP telephoto zoom camera at the back. The telephoto lens comes with 3x optical zoom, 6x in-sensor zoom, and 120x digital zoom. There is a 32MP cover and a 20MP main front camera as well.

In real-world performance, the camera setup turns out to be average at best. While some images come out incredibly sharp, others have a soft quality. Like other OnePlus devices, the camera applies a fair amount of processing, sometimes leading to over-sharpened images. You can zoom up to 100x but the image quality is not as sharp at this zoom level. Also, the performance of the cameras in low light is quite underwhelming.

2. Software is Underwhelming

OnePlus has taken inspiration from Samsung’s software by adding a taskbar at the bottom. Although the OS is free of bloatware which is good and robust as well we doubt if it will match the stability of Samsung’s OS. One can find minor glitches in always-on-feature and app continuity. For example, transitioning from using an app on the front screen to a large inner screen is not always smooth as there were launcher crashes.

3. Brand Value

While the OnePlus Open does give a tough fight to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5, it might still be a 2nd choice for many due to Samsung’s frequent sales and a more polished OS experience. Although the OnePlus Open costs Rs. 1,39,999 while Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 starts at Rs. 1,54,999 (12GB+256GB) and is thus more affordable, but considering the hold Samsung has on Indian market, many might prefer to go for a Samsung device if they are paying over 1 lakh for OnePlus Open as well.
