TL; DR
  • The GPT 5.1 model is available in two variants. While the GPT 5.1 Instant prioritizes speed and conversational tone, GPT 5.1 Thinking allocates more compute for complex reasoning and longer-form clarity.
  • OpenAI has also released a set of selectable personalities for its AI-based chatbot: Default, Professional, Friendly, Candid, Efficient, Nerdy, and Cynical.
  • OpenAI will first roll out GPT 5.1 to paid ChatGPT tiers, including Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education.

On Wednesday, OpenAI unveiled its latest language model, GPT 5.1. An iterative upgrade to the GPT-5 family, the new model aims to make conversations feel more natural, customizable, and easy to understand. As part of the launch, the company has announced two new models — GPT 5.1 Instant and GPT 5.1 Thinking — both tuned for different needs (which we’ll discuss later in the article).

GPT 5.1 Key Features

First and foremost, the GPT 5.1 model is available in two variants. While the GPT 5.1 Instant prioritizes speed and conversational tone, GPT 5.1 Thinking allocates more compute for complex reasoning and longer-form clarity. While paid users can select the model they deem is fit for their query, OpenAI will automatically match queries to the correct variant.

Besides the two variants, OpenAI has also released a set of selectable personalities for its AI-based chatbot: Default, Professional, Friendly, Candid, Efficient, Nerdy, and Cynical. Users also gain new controls to fine-tune tone and verbosity, resulting in a more personalized experience. OpenAI also highlights the improvements in mathematics and coding benchmarks.

GPT 5.1 Availability

OpenAI will first roll out GPT 5.1 to paid ChatGPT tiers, including Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education. Free or logged-out users will also get access to GPT 5.1 Instant, but that will happen over the next few days. While Enterprise and Education users have a seven-day early-access toggle that is off by default, Legavy GPT-5 models will remain available for three months, but only to paid users.

Moreover, GPT 5.1 is less of a leap in raw capability and more of a product pivot that emphasizes tone, usability, and configurability to address user complaints.

Even though some commentators have flagged risks about adding personalities to chatbots, OpenAI’s GPT 5.1 debut has those. The underlying concern is that warmer personalities could provide undue confidence to flawed or inaccurate responses, potentially playing with the built-in safety filters.
