TL; DR (tap to expand)
  • OPPO has officially confirmed that ColorOS 17 will not bring significant user interface changes. Instead, the upcoming version will focus on refinements, bug fixes, and basic experience optimizations.
  • The confirmation comes from ColorOS Design Director Chen Xi, who stated that the team will prioritize improving the existing foundation rather than overhauling the interface.
  • New major features have reportedly been postponed to future versions.

According to Chen Xi, the designer director for ColorOS, ColorOS 16 already delivers smooth animations and good overall responsiveness. Therefore, the development focus for ColorOS 17 has shifted toward fixing bugs and enhancing system stability.

“ColorOS 16’s animations and smoothness are already quite good. The focus now should be on fixing bugs and improving stability; there’s no need for major overhauls to the UI,” WhyLab noted.

Chen Xi further confirmed that ColorOS will not adopt the “liquid glass” design language that a competitor is currently pushing aggressively, though the company wasn’t explicitly mentioned. It is likely to be Xiaomi.

Beta Expected in August

The beta testing phase for ColorOS 17 is expected to begin around August 2026. This timeline aligns with OPPO’s (and many other Chinese brands’) recent strategy of releasing more conservative, stability-focused annual updates rather than introducing radical visual changes every year.

The decision suggests OPPO is taking a more measured approach with ColorOS 17. Instead of flashy new features or a complete visual overhaul, users can expect:

  • Improved system stability and fewer bugs
  • Better optimization and performance refinements
  • Minor UI tweaks and quality-of-life improvements
  • Continued focus on AI features (likely carried over and expanded from ColorOS 16)

This approach mirrors a broader industry trend in 2026, where several manufacturers, including Apple, are prioritizing reliability and polish over constant visual reinvention after years of aggressive redesigns.
