TL; DR
- A leak from Digital Chat Station says OPPO is testing a 1:1 square sensor for the front camera, likely for the Find X10 series later in 2026.
- A square sensor would allow selfies and videos in portrait or landscape without rotating the phone or losing framing.
- Whether this is a true 1:1 square sensor or a square-like octagonal design similar to Apple’s approach is still unknown.
OPPO may be working on a new front camera approach for its next flagship lineup. According to a Weibo post by Digital Chat Station, the company is testing a 1:1 square front-facing camera sensor, with the Find X10 series expected to be the first to use it.

The idea behind a square sensor is simple. Current selfie cameras rely on rectangular sensors, which work best in one orientation. Users often need to rotate the phone to avoid awkward cropping or lost framing. A true 1:1 sensor would allow selfies, video calls, and vlogs in both portrait and landscape while using the full sensor area.

This would make it easier to switch between vertical and horizontal content without thinking about orientation. Group selfies, social media posts, and video calls could all benefit from consistent framing.

Apple has used a similar concept on the iPhone 17 series, marketing its front camera as square. Teardowns later showed the sensor was closer to an octagonal shape, with cropped output when forced into square 1:1 mode. That limited the practical benefit and reduced usable resolution.

It is not yet clear whether OPPO’s version will be a true square sensor or use a similar workaround. The leak does not mention resolution, pixel size, or whether software cropping will still apply.
The Find X10 series is expected later in 2026.. If OPPO follows through, this could be one of the more noticeable usability changes to front cameras in years for Android flagships.
