TL; DR
- Qualcomm officially names its next flagship chipset Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, not 8 Elite 2.
- “Elite” branding is reserved for top-tier products, while Gen 5 hints at a broader lineup including Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 and 8s Gen 5.
- Full unveiling is set for Snapdragon Summit 2025 on September 23.
Qualcomm has officially confirmed what many leaks had already suggested: its next flagship mobile platform will indeed be called Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. The confirmation came directly from the company’s OnQ Blog, ending speculation that started when tipster Digital Chat Station first hinted at the name.
Qualcomm clarified that the naming marks a continuation of its roadmap rather than a reset. The “Gen 5” designation represents the fifth generation of its premium 8-series platforms since the company adopted the single-digit naming structure.

In Qualcomm’s own words, “Think of it like this: Gen 5 isn’t just a number. It’s a signal that this platform leads the family forward.”
At the same time, the “Elite” branding remains reserved for its most powerful platforms, described by Qualcomm as products that “push boundaries in capability, experience and innovation.” This makes the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 the flagship product in the portfolio, above the rumored 8 Gen 5 and 8s Gen 5.

Still, Qualcomm also seems to have skipped directly past 8 Elite Gen 2, Gen 3, and Gen 4, jumping straight to Gen 5. Hopefully, we get used to this naming soon, and Qualcomm doesn’t change it again next year.

What’s new with the 8 Elite Gen 5?

Leaks suggest that beyond the name, the hardware itself is a significant leap forward. The chipset is reportedly built on TSMC’s advanced 3 nm N3P process, which is expected to bring notable efficiency improvements.
It will continue with custom Qualcomm Oryon CPU cores, capable of pushing clock speeds up to 4.6 GHz and even 4.74 GHz for the “For Galaxy” edition. On the graphics side, an Adreno 840 GPU is expected.
Benchmark leaks already paint a promising picture. On Geekbench, the chipset reportedly hits 3,400 points in single-core and 11,000 in multi-core, while AnTuTu scores are said to reach an unprecedented 4.2 to 4.4 million points, a massive jump over its predecessor.
Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 and 8s Gen 5 Also Coming
As mentioned earlier, the flagship chipset is also expected to be joined by other members of the lineup, with leaks pointing to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 and Snapdragon 8s Gen 5, rounding out Qualcomm’s new approach to high-end performance.
