Ever since chip-making giant Qualcomm confirmed the date of its upcoming Tech Summit, several rumors suggested the company’s plans to bring major changes to their upcoming flagship chipsets. Now, Qualcomm itself has confirmed the change, and now it will be using a numeric naming scheme. This year Qualcomm’s new SoC will be named Snapdragon 8 Gen 1.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen1

A week ahead of its launch, Qualcomm today confirmed the new name of its upcoming flagship chipset. The names will entail “a single-digit series and generation number”, starting with the newest flagship Snapdragon 8 Series platform. So without saying it outright, Qualcomm is confirming that it won’t be Snapdragon 898 or anything like that, instead, it will be Snapdragon 8 Gen1 followed by Snapdragon 8 Gen2 and so on.

One more major change in the naming scheme is the removal of 5G from the official branding. Qualcomm has said that going forward, Snapdragon will be a standalone product brand where appropriate. Removing 5G from the name is appropriate as anyways the company is focusing on launching chips/platforms that are compatible with 5G. “5G has become ubiquitous across our Snapdragon Portfolio eliminating the need to call it out specifically on assets. Moving forward with Snapdragon connected platforms, 5G will be a given.” Said Qualcomm in its blog post.

In addition to this, Qualcomm will also change the names of its other products in different categories as the company feels that the new simplified naming structure will make it easier for customers to discover and choose devices powered by Snapdragon.

The mobile platforms will transition to a single-digit series and generation number, aligning with other product categories. This means that the Snapdragon 700 series will likely become Snapdragon 7 Gen1 whereas Snapdragon 600 will be called Snapdragon 6 Gen1 and so on.

Changes have also been announced to the Snapdragon “fireball” which will gain new prominence and manifest itself in new visual assets and other creative executions.” Representative colors are being introduced like Midnight, Gunmetal, Nickel, Snapdragon Red, and Gold. Gold will be used for premium tier products only.
