Qualcomm is proposing to enhance wireless connectivity in India with FastConnect 6800. This is the name of a sub-system for Snapdragon chips. Among other things, this will equip the mobile devices with Dual WiFi, i.e., two antennas for sending and receiving data.

You might not know this but several Snapdragon flagship chips like the Snapdragon 855, Snapdragon 855 Plus, and Snapdragon 8CX already support FastConnect 6200.

So in a way, this is an upgrade of the prevailing FastConnect module with features like Bluetooth 5.1, up to 1.8Gbps downlink speeds, dual-band WiFi (simultaneous connection to 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz channels), uplink MU-MIMO and 1024QAM for Wi-Fi 6.

The company has shared its research underlining the requirement as well as the benefits of Dual Wi-Fi.

As per Qualcomm’s study, 87% of the population does not receive whole-home Wi-Fi coverage. The primary pain points with respect to Wi-Fi are slow speed, congestion, and range. As a result, 1 in 2 people switches from Wi-Fi to cellular networks at home.

The Wi-Fi connectivity problems pertain to outdoor environments too such as Public Wi-Fis at Airports, Railway stations, restaurants/hotels, etc. Around 85% suffer from poor speed and 72% from congestion.

Dual WiFi and its Benefits

Dual Wifi, for those who’re unfamiliar with the concept, is the use of 2 WiFi antennas in mobile devices instead of one. Indoors, signals are prone to fade and drop due to metallic interferences and distance between the router and the device. With a secondary antenna, there will be two different reference points for signal reception or transmission (or both). In case one antenna fails, the device will resort to the alternate. This synergy results in better signal strength and performance.

Here are a few of the benefits of having mobile devices with 2 antennas:

  • They will be able to solve signal fading and dead spots.
  • Significantly better coverage, especially in hard to reach areas
  • Up to 2x higher throughput, Faster downloads, better video experience, and longer battery life.

We are just a month away from 2020, the year when the said technologies are set to hit the mainstream. Well, needless to say, Qualcomm has a big role to play in innovation and development as the year unfolds.
