While the main highlights of the Galaxy Unpacked event (July 10) were the Galaxy Z Fold6/Flip6 and the Galaxy Ring, Samsung also briefly mentioned its long-forgotten XR headset. For those catching up, the Korean tech giant announced its plans to develop an XR headset in collaboration with Google and Qualcomm. However, that was during the company’s February 2023 launch event, and since then, there has been no significant update about the device, until now.

Samsung’s XR Headset Could Arrive Later This Year, Possibly In October
At the Galaxy Unpacked event, Samsung called upon the stage the senior vice president of platforms and devices at Google, Rick Osterloh, to reaffirm their partnership. While the executive talked about a few things, one of them happened to be the XR headset that was on its way. Further, the president and head of mobile business and experience at Samsung, TM Roh, also confirmed that “a new XR platform is coming later this year.”
Samsung could unveil the product, or at least provide more details about it, at the Developer’s Conference (SDC) on October 3, 2024. If we’re lucky, Google might also speak about the product, or at least the software that powers it, at the August launch event for the Pixel 9 series.

What Else Do We Know About Samsung’s XR Headset
Finally, Samsung’s rumored XR headset has a release window, but that’s the extent of official information. Turning the pages in the rumors book, the headset could be called the Samsung Infinite. Further, it will compete directly with Apple’s Vision Pro, a mixed-reality headset that seems to be struggling to find the right product-market fit, at least in 2024.
The California-based chip manufacturer Qualcomm is supposed to create a superior platform to power the headset, whereas Google could be the one behind the software. Unlike the Vision Pro, though, Samsung’s XR headset could cost around $1,500, which translates to about Rs. 1,25,000.
