Qualcomm, one of the leading chipset makers, has been continuously improving its SoCs with an aim to make smartphones faster and smoother than ever before. After launching Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset last year, Qualcomm launched 8+ Gen 1 last month claiming an improvement in performance and better battery efficiency.

Now, information related to Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 has surfaced and will launch sometime in November during Snapdragon submit 2023. Ever since the upcoming SoC has been confirmed, there have been various leaks and reports about what its specs would be and how it would better the performance of its predecessors.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Chipset to Quad cluster architecture combination?

According to tipster Digital Chat Station, the upcoming chipset from Qualcomm will have a really weird cluster combination. It will allegedly have these 4 different CPU islands-

  • 1 cortex -X3 (Makalu Elp) core
  • 2 cortex-A720 (Makalu) cores
  • 2 A710 (Matterhorn) cores
  • 3 A510 cores (Klein- R1) cores

Qualcomm will be using 4nm node process established by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) to fabricate these complex chip.

So far, Qualcomm has been offering a tri-cluster architecture using a 1+3+4 configuration. In this setup, there is one ARM high-performance core, three mid-level cores and four power-efficiency cores.

If leaks turn out to be true, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 will be an even more complex chipset. The octa-core chipset will have a 1+2+2+3 configuration. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 may feature one Makalu generation core coupled with two Makalu generation cores, followed by two Matterhorn cores, and three Klein R1 cores.

ARM’s Matterhorn generation refers to its 2021 Cortex CPUs, whereas Makalu is meant for 2022 phones. As per ARM, the Makalu Generation cores will deliver 30 percent better performance as compared to Cortex X1 cores.

Other details about the upcoming processor are that it will be based on a 4nm process from TSMC and feature an Adreno 740 GPU.

Esper’s Mishaal Rahman believes that this weird combination is due to 32-bit app support which is not present in unannounced cores. So to make up for this need, A710s have been thrown into the mix.

More details about the SM8550 will start surfacing later this year as the Snapdragon 8 gen 2 is expected to power Galaxy S23 series next year. So, we still have to wait for some months to know if these rumours are true or not.
