In the heat of Coronaphobia, Sony struck to an online event to unveil the all-new and coming PlayStation 5. The event which had Mr. Mark Cerny, lead system architect for PS5, on stage, presenting to an audience of cardboard cutouts. Regardless, we got a breadth of view at the hardware specs, but not the hardware.
The presentation and theme of the event centered around how the new console would bring about a gain in speed and storage performance so that gamers get to “spend more time gaming than waiting”.
Sony PlayStation 5 Specs and Features
As mentioned above, Mark threw light on two factors prominently – Speed and Storage improvements.

Here’s what new –
- At the core lies a Custom AMD CPU based on the Zen 2 architecture, and with a maximum clock speed of 3.5GHz.
- This is complemented by a custom AMD GPU based on the RDNA 2 architecture. The GPU has 36CUs and total performance of 10.3TFLOPS. This should result in higher resolution and added realism due to ray tracing. For those unversed, Ray tracing mimics light movements in the game like a real-world environment.
- Similarly, it also bears a custom audio engine for the 3D audio atmosphere.
- PS5 will ship with an 825GB SSD. Interestingly enough, PS5 will accommodate M.2 SSDs from the open market if you want to ramp up that storage.
- It also supports backward compatibility with PS4 titles. They have tested around 400 games so far and more to hit the wringer in the future.
