TL;DR
  • Jio Cinema and Disney+Hotstar have now become one consolidated OTT platform.
  • It will be called JioHotstar and stream all the content that was previously available on either Jio Cinema or Disney+Hotstar app.
  • Subscription plans have been announced that start from Rs. 149/month.
  • Is the new OTT platform better than existing Netflix and Prime Video apps? This remains to be seen.

The merger between Reliance Jio, Viacom 18, and Disney has been officially announced, resulting in integrating the OTT platforms Jio Cinema and Disney+ Hotstar into a single entity named JioHotstar. Disney+ has also rebranded its X account to JioStar, and all content from Jio Cinema has been transferred to the newly named JioHotstar app.

This unified OTT platform combines offerings from both networks, providing an extensive library of movies, series, and live sports in one location. Currently, the primary competitors in the Indian OTT market are JioHotstar, Amazon Prime Video, and Netflix India. The question now arises: which of these platforms delivers the best value for money based on their pricing plans and available content? Let’s explore.

Which one Should you Choose?

If we compare the plan pricing, JioHotstar and Netflix offer one month of access to content for just Rs. 149 while Prime Video offers it for Rs. 299. So Prime Video is comparatively pricier but then it bundles other benefits like free delivery on Amazon orders, Prime Reading, Prime Gaming, and more. This balances out a little but at the end of the day, which OTT platform you want to subscribe to totally depends on what your content consumption interests and budget are.
