India’s passenger vehicle market was full of surprises last mont in August 2026. From petrol showing fewer signs of slowing down, to a surprising entrant to the best-seller list, August 2026 saw Tata Punch emerging as the country’s best-selling car for the month. The compact SUV shipped 21,320 units, edging out a tightly packed field that was dominated by the Maruti Suzuki with cars like the Wagon R, Swift, and the Fronx. Maruti Suzuki continued to command the volume game, placing six of its models in the top ten, while Tata Motors, Hyundai, and Mahindra took up the remaining four spots.
Not just the fact that who finished on top, but how narrow the margins were throughout the middle of the chart, and how strong the year-on-year growth has been across nearly every nameplate on the list is also what is interesting about last month’s sales numbers.
Tata Punch — 21,320 units

The Punch didn’t just win in August 2026, it nearly doubled its own performance from a year earlier. The micro-SUV sold 21,320 units against 10,704 units in August 2025, a 99 per cent jump that was the single largest growth rate in the entire top ten. That kind of surge for a model already established in the market points to sustained demand rather than a low-base effect alone, and it was enough to push the Punch clear of Maruti Suzuki’s best-known nameplates for the month.
Maruti Suzuki Wagon R — 20,180 units
The Wagon R held on to second place with 20,180 units, up from 14,552 units in the same month last year, a 39 per cent increase. It remains one of Maruti Suzuki’s most dependable volume generators, and its steady growth this year suggests the hatchback segment still has plenty of life left in it, even as SUVs continue to eat into overall market share elsewhere.

Maruti Suzuki Swift — 19,832 units

The Swift finished third with 19,832 units, just 1,488 units behind the table-topping Punch. Its year-on-year growth of 60 per cent, up from 12,385 units in August 2025, was the second-highest gain in the entire top ten. The margin between the Punch, Wagon R, and Swift across the first three positions was razor-thin, underlining how competitive the top of the chart has become this year.
Maruti Suzuki Fronx — 18,730 units

Maruti Suzuki’s crossover, the Fronx, took fourth spot with 18,730 units, a 51 per cent rise from 12,422 units a year earlier. Since its 2023 launch, the Fronx has become one of the brand’s standout performers, and August’s numbers confirm it continues to gain traction rather than plateau.
Maruti Suzuki Ertiga — 18,516 units
The Ertiga rounded out the top five with 18,516 units, virtually unchanged from its August 2025 tally of 18,445 units. The MPV added just 71 units year-on-year, translating to effectively flat growth. It’s the only model in the top ten that didn’t post a meaningful gain, though its consistency still kept it well ahead of several rivals in absolute volume.

Tata Nexon — 18,431 units

Tata’s second entry in the list, the Nexon, came in sixth with 18,431 units, up 32 per cent from 14,004 units in August 2025. The compact SUV continues to be a steady contributor to Tata Motors’ overall volumes, sitting comfortably alongside the Punch as one of the brand’s two representatives in the country’s best-sellers list.
Maruti Suzuki Dzire — 18,418 units

India’s best-selling sedan, the Dzire, finished seventh with 18,418 units, just 13 units behind the Nexon. That’s about as close as two models can get in a monthly sales chart. The Dzire’s 12 per cent year-on-year growth, up from 16,509 units in August 2025, was among the more modest gains in the list, but its volume still comfortably outpaces most other sedans on sale in India.
Hyundai Creta — 16,288 units
Hyundai’s sole representative in the top ten, the Creta, took eighth position with 16,288 units, compared to 15,924 units in August 2025. The 2 per cent increase was one of the smallest in the chart, suggesting the midsize SUV’s sales have largely plateaued even as it remains a strong performer in absolute terms.

Maruti Suzuki Baleno — 15,746 units
The Baleno claimed ninth spot with 15,746 units, a 25 per cent improvement over the 12,549 units sold in August 2025. With a facelifted version now available, Maruti Suzuki will be hoping for further volume gains from the premium hatchback in the months ahead.
Mahindra Scorpio — 15,576 units
Mahindra’s Scorpio completed the top ten with 15,576 units, up 58 per cent from 9,840 units a year earlier. That growth rate was the third-highest in the list, behind only the Punch and the Swift, and it underscores how strong demand remains for Mahindra’s SUV lineup.
The Bigger Picture
Taken together, the numbers paint a clear picture of a market still expanding briskly. Maruti Suzuki’s six entries — the Wagon R, Swift, Fronx, Ertiga, Dzire, and Baleno — added up to 111,422 units between them, reaffirming the company’s dominance in sheer volume. Tata Motors’ two models, the Punch and Nexon, contributed a combined 39,751 units, with the Punch’s blistering 99 per cent growth doing much of the heavy lifting.
Almost every model on the list recorded double-digit year-on-year growth, with only the Ertiga’s essentially flat performance breaking the trend. That broad-based strength, spread across hatchbacks, sedans, SUVs, and an MPV, suggests India’s passenger vehicle demand in August 2026 wasn’t concentrated in any single segment but was instead running strong across the board.
