India’s passenger vehicle market put up a strong first half in 2026, crossing 25.91 lakh units in cumulative sales across petrol, diesel, CNG, EV and strong hybrid powertrains. That’s a healthy 18.4 percent jump over the 21.88 lakh units sold in H1 2025, with virtually every powertrain category posting year-on-year growth, the lone exception being strong hybrids, which stayed flat. Here’s a detailed, powertrain-wise breakdown of which cars led the charts and what’s driving the shifts beneath the numbers.

Petrol — Maruti Baleno leads with 83,552 units

The Maruti Suzuki Baleno climbed to the top of the petrol sales charts in H1 2026, moving 83,552 units for a 19 percent year-on-year gain. The Swift followed closely at 81,046 units, though its sales stayed flat compared to last year. The bigger story in this segment was the Tata Punch, which jumped to third position with 61,701 units — a 29 percent YoY increase powered by the updated model that arrived at the start of 2026. The Fronx (61,565 units) slipped 6 percent, while the Alto K10 posted the segment’s strongest growth at 38 percent, reaching 59,165 units and signalling renewed buyer interest in entry-level cars. The Hyundai Venue also had a strong showing at 55,750 units (+26%), riding on its second-generation model launched late last year, even as the Creta — India’s midsize SUV sales leader — saw petrol volumes dip 8 percent to 49,094 units.

Diesel — Mahindra Scorpio leads with 86,403 units

Diesel remains a niche but resilient segment, and Mahindra swept the top three spots outright. The Scorpio N and Classic combined led with 86,403 units (+7%), followed by the Bolero+Neo at 58,457 units (+16%) and the XUV 7XO at 42,190 units, which posted the strongest growth among the trio at 29 percent. The Hyundai Creta’s diesel variants added 40,116 units, down 4 percent, while the Thar Roxx (37,945 units, +19%) and standard Thar (23,860 units, +35%) both grew comfortably. The Kia Seltos edged out the newly listed Tata Sierra by fewer than 150 units — 22,906 against 22,764 — with the Seltos posting a striking 54 percent YoY jump. The Toyota Innova Crysta was the only major diesel nameplate to shrink further down the list, down 5 percent to 18,498 units, while the Kia Sonet recorded the segment’s best growth rate at 67 percent, reaching 18,290 units. Six of the ten diesel bestsellers logged double-digit growth, underlining that diesel demand is far from fading despite the higher upfront costs versus petrol or CNG equivalents.

CNG — Maruti Ertiga leads with 78,764 units

CNG was the standout performer of H1 2026, with every model in the top ten posting solid gains. The Ertiga led the pack at 78,764 units (+23%), but it was the Dzire that delivered the segment’s most dramatic growth, surging 69 percent to 75,339 units. The Fronx followed with a 49 percent jump to 33,876 units, and the Punch grew 43 percent to 41,919 units. The Wagon R (54,267 units, +5%), Nexon (41,355 units, +38%), Brezza (39,871 units, +8%) and Eeco (36,075 units, +31%) rounded out a segment dominated almost entirely by Maruti Suzuki, which claimed seven of the ten spots. The Victoris, a new entrant, notched 38,806 units, while the Hyundai Aura was the only non-Maruti, non-Tata model to feature, growing 29 percent to 35,089 units. Uncertainty around ethanol blending in petrol appears to be nudging a meaningful share of buyers toward CNG as a more predictable, lower-running-cost alternative.

Electric — MG Windsor EV leads with 19,080 units

The EV segment kept up its rapid expansion, growing a sector-leading 65 percent overall even though its individual chart-topper actually slipped. The MG Windsor EV held on to the top spot with 19,080 units despite a 10 percent YoY decline, while the Mahindra XEV 9S — a new entrant — finished a strong second at 18,074 units. Tata dominated much of the rest of the list: the Nexon EV grew 78 percent to 16,567 units, and the Punch EV nearly doubled with a 108 percent surge to 15,683 units, aided by its 2026 facelift. The Mahindra XEV 9e dipped 14 percent to 11,242 units, while the Tata Harrier EV posted a headline-grabbing 2,110 percent jump to 10,499 units — though that figure is somewhat inflated by its June 2025 launch giving it a tiny base to compare against. The Maruti e Vitara debuted with 8,572 units, the Tata Curvv EV more than tripled its sales to 7,281 units (+212%), and the Mahindra BE 6 grew a modest 13 percent to 6,849 units. The Tiago EV was the outlier here, dropping 19 percent to 6,816 units despite also receiving updates this year.

Strong hybrid — Toyota Innova Hycross leads with 27,812 units

Strong hybrids were the only powertrain category to stay flat overall, and the picture within the segment was mixed. The Innova Hycross remained the clear leader despite a 6 percent decline to 27,812 units, while its Toyota sibling, the Hyryder, grew 23 percent to 18,577 units. The Maruti Victoris was the only genuinely new strong hybrid launched between H1 2025 and H1 2026, slotting into fourth place with 3,231 units. Its stablemates didn’t fare as well, the Grand Vitara fell a steep 54 percent to just 4,086 units, and the Invicto (a rebadged Hycross) dropped 26 percent to 1,418 units. The Toyota Camry stayed nearly flat at 1,188 units, while the Vellfire posted the segment’s best growth at 60 percent, albeit off a small base of 914 units, a sign of the luxury MPV segment’s rising traction. The Honda City hybrid also grew 22 percent to 659 units, still a modest number but its best showing since the facelift.

The Bigger Picture

Petrol remains comfortably the largest powertrain category by volume, at 13,42,304 units and 10 percent YoY growth, but CNG stole the show with a 40 percent jump to 5,96,236 units, the highest absolute volume increase of any powertrain in this year. EVs continued their steep upward trajectory, growing 65 percent to 1,39,065 units as more options arrive across price points, while diesel quietly kept expanding too, up 15 percent to 4,56,076 units. Strong hybrids were the one segment left behind, stuck at 57,885 units with zero YoY growth, a reflection of the category’s continued lack of options and incentives compared to EVs and CNG vehicles. Every fuel type is expected to carry forward the growth momentum throughout the rest of 2026. Petrol cars, however, might just see a decline in sales given the questions around ethanol blending and what the near future beholds.
