Two Chinese smartphone companies, Vivo and Trannsion Holdings, will reportedly release a rollable smartphone by the end of 2024. In the past, Vivo has released a couple of foldable smartphones, while Transsion Holdings owns Tecno, which has a similar experience. Together, these companies are working on a new segment of phones.

First Rollable Phones Could Arrive By 2024

According to a report by CNMO, Vivo and Transsion Holdings are working on smartphones with rollable displays. These phones should come out by 2024. Although the launch timeline seems too rushed, considering that rollable technology has yet to make it to mass production and users are still skeptical about foldable phones. Although brands like Samsung and Oppo have launched several generations of foldable smartphones, they have yet to release any rollable phones.

Here’s Why They’re Working On Rollable Phones Instead Of Foldables

This is where Vivo and Transsion Holdings are willing to pitch their rollable phones. Since it’s difficult to compete with Samsung’s popular Fold and Flip lineup, the Chinese companies are eager to bet on the unexplored terrain of rollable phones. How these phones would function or their design is not known at the moment.

Tecno Phantom Ultimate concept phone

Tecno Recently Showcased A Rollable Phone’s Concept

However, we’ve seen several concepts wherein a regular-looking smartphone rolls out its display by rolling out the rest of the screen. Most recently, Tecno showcased the Phantom Ultimate, a smartphone that extends its screen by pressing a button at the top. As the display expands, we can see the user interface adjusting accordingly. In the regular mode, the smartphone has a 6.55-inch screen, which can turn into a 7.11-inch when needed.

For those catching up, Tecno operates under Transsion Holdings, and the company will likely utilize the idea and mechanics from the Phantom Ultimate to make its first rollable with Vivo. However, until the brands confirm other details, we don’t have much information on their first rollable, its specifications, or the price tag that will allow the brand to sustain development and keep working on the phone for a long time.
