With Microsoft and Google taking the lead in AI integration into their products and services, Meta could no longer sit back. The company has introduced a new LLM AI-based chatbot in WhatsApp that answers your queries and generates images for you.

The integration into WhatsApp is a highly clever way of promoting the chatbot since billions of people worldwide are already using the app for messaging.

The Meta AI feature, codenamed LlaMa, is currently being tested with a select group of users in India. You can access Meta AI by tapping on its icon at the app’s top corner. You can then ask questions or seek information, receiving responses powered by LlaMa.

Meta AI Features

From the screenshots shared by users on X and other platforms, we can confirm the following features will be available with Meta AI:

  • Meta AI has access to the internet; so it can tell you everything from today’s news to the weather to whatever you want.
  • Meta AI can generate images with multi-modal AI.
  • Your messages to the Meta AI might be used to improve quality. Personal messages will remain end-to-end encrypted and private.

How to Use Meta AI

This feature is currently available in limited countries, including India, and supports the English language. You need to be on the latest version of WhatsApp Messenger on either iOS or Android. There is no word on the availability of a desktop at the moment.

Once you have everything ready, follow the steps below to use Meta AI.

1. On Android, tap on the Meta AI icon above the floating shortcut. On iPhone, tap on the Meta AI icon at the top next to the search icon.

activate meta ai

2. Now, tap on Continue.

tap continue

3. Type in a query or a message and tap the Send button.

ask meta ai

2. If you want to generate an image, follow your prompt with a forward slash / (for example: /generate a cat riding a bicycle).

Given the AI chatbot is fairly new, WhatsApp allows users to provide feedback on the responses generated by Meta AI, rating them as either “Good response” or “Bad response.”

The feature was initially being tested in the US and is now rolling out to other countries in a phased manner. If you don’t see the feature yet, rest assured; it should arrive in a few weeks.

Before you ask, Meta AI is not built on GPT-4; instead, it relies on the company’s proprietary LLM model called LlaMa. While the current iteration of Meta AI is powered by LlaMa 2, it is anticipated to be updated to LlaMa 3 upon its release.
