For years, AirDrop has been one of the most reliable and efficient ways to share files between iPhone devices. The feature has helped users transfer gigabytes worth of files in seconds, maybe even a minute or two. Considering AirDrop’s utility and how a similar feature benefits a messaging app, the Meta-owned app WhatsApp has been working on its own file-sharing system that could help users reduce their dependency on a wireless network.

Can WhatsApp Add An AirDrop-Like Feature?

Essentially, AirDrop creates a peer-to-peer wireless network wherein one phone’s Wi-Fi receiver connects to the other’s transmitter (or what we commonly call a hotspot) for a faster file transfer. And from what it looks like, WhatsApp is working on a similar solution for users’ file transferring needs, especially the large videos and photos that take forever to send via mobile internet or a shared Wi-Fi network. The feature is called “People Nearby,” and it was first spotted in January 2024 by WABetaInfo.
Here’s How The People Nearby Feature Could Work On WhatsApp

The publication found the feature in WhatsApp beta for Android v2.24.2.20. As seen in the screenshot attached above, the app was working on a feature that lets users share files with people in close proximity, i.e., in their device’s Bluetooth and Wi-Fi range. Further, both users would have to open the particular section in the app, regardless of whether they are sending or receiving a file. Regarding privacy, the feature ensures that users’ phone numbers remain hidden from those who aren’t in their contact list.

In April, the publication spotted a more refined version of the feature in the making, allowing users to share photos, media, and files on their devices with someone on their local network. Apparently, users will find easy access to this particular section of the app directly in the settings. Further, the publication noted that sharing remains end-to-end encrypted. The updated version of the feature was spotted in WhatsApp beta for Android v 2.24.9.22.
Most Recently, People Nearby Was Spotted On WhatsApp’s Beta For iOS

Now, WABetaInfo has spotted the same feature on WhatsApp for iOS v24.15.10.70. This clarifies that the People Nearby could be released as part of the app’s public version soon. “Sharing files with people nearby without relying on an internet connection significantly will enhance the file transfer experience.” As and when the feature comes out, we’ll compile a detailed article with instructions about how to transfer files on WhatsApp using the People Nearby feature.
