TL; DR
  • According to the Chinese tipster Digital Chat Station, Xiaomi is testing a new smartphone (as part of its sub-brand) with a massive battery.
  • If the tipster is correct, the purported handset could have a larger battery than the upcoming Redmi Turbo 5 Pro, which is expected to debut with an 8.000 mAh battery (larger than the 7,550 mAh battery on the Redmi Turbo 4 Pro).

While you might not encounter them on mainstream flagships from Samsung, Apple, or Google, Chinese brands have been using silicon-carbon batteries on their smartphones for some time.

When compared to regular lithium-ion batteries, silicon-carbon batteries are known to accommodate a higher energy density, increasing the battery capacity without increasing the thickness of a phone.

Phones like vivo X200 (review), Oppo Find X8 (review), and several mid-range offerings from Chinese brands already feature the technology. Now, a renowned tipster has claimed that a brand is working on an exceptionally larger battery.

A Chinese Company Is Working On A 9,000 mAh Battery Phone

Forget the Redmi Turbo 5 Pro, Xiaomi Is Working On A Smartphone With Up To 9,000 mAh Battery

According to the Chinese tipster Digital Chat Station, Xiaomi is testing a new smartphone (as part of its sub-brand) with a massive battery. The tipster mentions that the brand has “successfully tested [a phone] in the laboratory with an 8,500 mAh battery, approaching 9,000 mAh.”

It is worth mentioning here that the tipster hasn’t mentioned the company or the brand’s name. Instead, it is the Weibo users (in the comment section) who are connecting the rumor with the Chinese smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi (whose sub-brand Redmi is experimenting with an 8,500 – 9,000 mAh battery).

Along with developing a consumer-grade battery with a massive battery, the company (likely Xiaomi) is also trying to retain the battery cycle life and the thickness of the body (which is said to be within 8.5mm).

Xiaomi Might Use Some Sort Of Proprietary Silicon-Carbon Technology

If the tipster is correct, the purported handset could have a larger battery than the upcoming Redmi Turbo 5 Pro, which is expected to debut with an 8.000 mAh battery (larger than the 7,550 mAh battery on the Redmi Turbo 4 Pro).

To achieve this, the company is likely using a modified version of the current silicon-carbon battery, likely with higher energy density than regular Si/C batteries (around 20% more than). If this happens, the phone will become a mainstream phone with one of the largest batteries.
