In 2022, Apple released the AirPods Pro (2nd Generation) with the H2 chip that improved sound quality, noise cancelation, and transparency mode. A few months after the launch, the company confirmed that it will add more features to the device. Now, as the Cupertino-based tech giant rolls out iOS 17 to compatible iPhones, it introduces features like Adaptive Audio, a new gesture to mute/unmute a call, and Personalized Audio.

What Is Adaptive Audio On AirPods Pro (2nd Generation)?

Out of the box, the AirPods Pro (2nd Generation) offers three sound modes, including the regular mode (with passive cancelation), the active noise cancelation mode that cuts out background noise, and the Transparency Mode that lets users be aware of their surroundings. However, Adaptive Mode offers a mix of noise cancelation and transparency based on the users’ environment. One can enable Adaptive Audio through the Control Center by holding on to the volume slider while wearing the earbuds and selecting the option.

To achieve this, the earbuds rely on the H2 chip that recognizes constant and transitory noise. The earbuds also consider whether the user is standing, walking, listening to music, taking a voice call, etc. As a result, when users move into a noisy environment, the AirPods Pro (2nd Generation) increases the cancelation level, while in a quiet environment, the earphones switch to Transparency Mode. Of course, users can still take manual control of these modes.

Personalized Volume And Conversation Awareness

Per Apple, Personalized Volume uses machine learning to understand a user’s environmental conditions and listening preferences to fine-tune the media experience. In other words, the feature should adjust the volume automatically. Personalized Volume complements Adaptive Audio, as both aim to provide uninterrupted playback.

Apple is also adding Conversation Awareness to the latest AirPods Pro. With the feature enabled, the earbuds lower the media volume and enhance voices in front of the users when they start talking while wearing their AirPods. When the conversation ends, the device turns up the playback volume and returns the users to the original settings. Both these features are available in the AirPods’ settings menu.

Other Improvements To AirPods Pro (2nd Generation)

Apple has also added a new gesture that allows users to mute/unmute ongoing calls by pressing the stem once. Earlier, this gesture ended a phone call. Users would have to press and hold their AirPods Pro’s stem to end a call.

Last but not least, the company improves Automatic Switching, which allows the earbuds to switch between Apple devices, by reducing the connection time. All these features should provide AirPods Pro (2nd Generation) users with a better experience, whether they’re listening to their favorite tracks or conversing with someone with the AirPods on.
