Amazon to set up its first device manufacturing line in India

It will start with the production of FireTV stick from later this year.

As a part of the Government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative, Amazon is set to begin its first electronic device manufacturing unit in the country later this year. The decision was announced post a meeting with Shri. Ravi Shankar Prasad, Minister for Communications, Electronics & Information Technology and Law & Justice, GOI.

“We welcome Amazon’s decision to set up a manufacturing line in Chennai, as it will enhance domestic production capacities, and create jobs as well. This will further our mission of creating an Atmanirbhar Bharat which is digitally empowered,” said the minister.

Amazon has partnered with Cloud Network Technology, a Foxconn subsidiary to manufacture “hundreds of thousands” of Fire TV Sticks at a Chennai-based factory. The tech giant will be assessing other marketplaces/cities depending on requirements to scale.

On the new development, Mr. Amit Agarwal, Global SVP and Country Leader for Amazon India, said, “Amazon is committed to partner with the Indian government to advance the vision of an Aatmanirbhar Bharat. We have pledged to invest the US $1 billion to digitize 10 million small and medium businesses, help Indian businesses sell worldwide thereby enabling US $10B in cumulative exports, and create additional 1MM jobs by 2025”.
