The technology leader Apple is presently conducting WWDC 2025, and in addition to unveiling iOS 26, macOS 26, watchOS 26, and other updates, the company has introduced two new features for AirPods that will be available for existing models, one of which has its roots in the EarPods era.

Camera Control

In the era of wired EarPods, users had the ability to utilize them as a remote shutter release for their camera. This functionality is now being introduced to AirPods, allowing you to activate the camera from a distance, which is perfect for group photos when your iPhone is mounted on a tripod or propped up in another manner. To capture a photo or begin recording a video, users will need to press and hold the stem of the AirPods, and a subsequent press and hold will halt the recording.

Studio Quality Audio Recording

Last year, Apple introduced the Audio Mix feature for iPhone, which utilizes AI to selectively filter audio by including or excluding various elements. One of the modes, called Studio, is designed to simulate a studio environment by capturing only the sounds close to the microphone. This functionality is now compatible with AirPods, allowing them to function as a wireless lavalier microphone.

Thanks to the H2 chip, beamforming microphones, and computational audio technology, users will experience enhanced vocal texture and clarity during iPhone calls, FaceTime, and CallKit-enabled applications. The high-quality audio recording and improved call quality are available across iPhone, iPad, and Mac, and also extend support to the Camera app, Voice Memos, dictation in Messages, and video conferencing applications such as Webex.
