Apple enthusiasts have reason to rejoice as the tech giant announced today at its “Wonderlust” event that iOS 17 is on the horizon, set to be available to all users with compatible iPhone models starting Monday, September 18. The latest iteration of Apple’s operating system brings a host of exciting updates and improvements, including revamped contact cards and innovative voicemail functionalities.

Best of iOS 17: Featuring StandBy Mode, NameDrop, Interactive Widgets, and More

1. Posters

One of the standout features of iOS 17 is the redesigned contact cards, now adorned with a new element called “posters.” These eye-catching marquee-like images transform your contact information into visually engaging displays that occupy the entire screen of the recipient’s iPhone during a call. This creative addition adds a touch of flair to your communications, making each call visually memorable.

2. Live transcription for calls

Voicemail experiences a significant enhancement with the introduction of the live transcription feature. As callers leave a message, users can view a real-time transcript of the voicemail, giving them the option to either listen to the message or read it. This live transcription capability provides users with more flexibility and convenience in managing their voicemail communications.

3. Check IN

Messaging in iOS 17 also receives noteworthy updates. Users can now enjoy transcriptions of voice messages, similar to the functionality introduced in the Pixel 7 series. Additionally, a collection of new features called “Check In” assists users in effortlessly conveying their live location and status to individuals they are planning to meet. Furthermore, stickers receive an overhaul, enabling users to incorporate any emoji or photo cutout as a “sticker,” which can be positioned on iMessages or within the system.

4. Name Drop

AirDrop, the popular file-sharing feature, receives a clever enhancement known as “NameDrop.” This feature enables users to conveniently share their selected email addresses, phone numbers, and posters simply by bringing two iPhones close to each other. In addition to sharing contact information, the improved AirDrop allows seamless sharing of photos, even allowing downloads to continue if the devices move out of range during the transfer, particularly for larger files.

iOS 17 also includes updates to the keyboard, offering enhancements to autocorrect functionality. The new version relies on an advanced language model, while also providing users with an easier shortcut to revert back to the original word they typed, if necessary. Dictation functionality benefits from a new AI model, further improving accuracy and performance.

5. StandBy Mode

Apple has also introduced StandBy, an innovative charging mode that enhances the charging experience by transforming the screen into a dynamic status display. This feature showcases essential information such as the date and time, Live Activities updates, widgets, and smart stacks. StandBy automatically activates when your phone is placed in landscape mode while charging, providing users with a convenient and informative view.

With the StandBy mode, Apple aims to offer users a seamless charging experience by leveraging the screen’s potential when the device is connected to power. By utilizing the landscape orientation, users can have easy access to vital information at a glance, making it effortless to stay updated while their device is charging.

6. Hey Siri

Siri has also received significant enhancements in iOS 17, empowering users with an even more efficient voice assistant experience. Apple has implemented a notable change, allowing users to drop the “hey” from the familiar “Hey Siri” wake phrase. Now, Siri can be activated simply by addressing it with a command, streamlining the interaction process and making voice commands feel more natural and conversational.

This latest iteration of iOS follows the notable updates introduced in iOS 16, which included significant enhancements to the lock screen, useful iMessage features such as editing and unsending messages, and the introduction of time-sensitive Live Activities on the Dynamic Island. While iOS 16 focused on improving everyday usability and streamlining tasks, iOS 17 builds upon these foundations, offering users even more powerful tools and functionalities.

While iOS 16 was lauded for its valuable quality-of-life upgrades, iOS 17 introduces a range of new features that further enhance the iPhone experience. However, it is worth noting that some features, such as the always-on display and Dynamic Island, remain exclusive to the iPhone 14 Pro, further distinguishing it from the regular iPhone 14.
