In October this year, we should get our hands on the Google Pixel 9 series powered by Tensor G4 SoC. Although we are still a few months away from the Pixel 9 series, reports have started mushrooming regarding the Pixel 10 series powered by Tensor G5 SoC citing Google followed similar nomenclature. With that being said, Samsung Foundry may not be a part of Tensor G5 SoC and instead, Google will join forces with chip manufacturing juggernaut TSMC.

The folks at Android Authority reported about a publicly available database containing a shipping manifest that lists packages and under-development versions of Google Tensor G5 SoC. Albeit the manifest doesn’t explicitly mention Tensor G5 SoC, it does call the chipset with its codename ‘LGA’ or Laguna Beach. It mentions the chipset will use TMSC’s InFO POP technology paired alongside at least 16GB of RAM manufactured by Samsung.

The listing mentions Tessolve Semiconductor, an India-based company that tests semiconductors and has previous experience of working with Samsung. Unfortunately, the listing links the upcoming Google Tensor G5 SoC with Taiwan-based TSMC (which also manufactures A-series chips for Apple). Unfortunately, any other details w.r.t. Tensor G5 SoC remains shrouded in mystery.

Google has been considering switching from Samsung Foundry for some time now. Google Pixel 9 series will still stick to Samsung-made G4 SoC given the time it takes to propagate from one chip maker to another. Switching to TSMC gives Google manifold advantages including higher production yield, better performance, and efficiency that the chipmaker has shown time and again.

As the timeline suggests, the Google Pixel 9 series comprising of Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, and a supposed Pixel 9 Pro XL will drop by this September/October. These will be powered by Tensor G4 SoC codenamed Zuma Pro. However, don’t expect much of a performance upgrade compared to Pixel 8’s Tensor G3 SoC. Cut to 2025, we should see a serious upgrade in performance once a TSMC-made G5 SoC arrives on top of the Pixel 10 series.
