We all remember Ghost of Tsushima, the hit open-world game from 2020. Well, it is getting a sequel and if the trailers from Sony’s State of Play are anything to go by, Ghost of Yotei could very well outdo its predecessor in terms of having an interesting storyline and super engaging gameplay.

At Sony’s State of Play showcase, the developers from Sucker Punch Productions showcased the trailer for Ghost of Yotei, which is the sequel to Ghost of Tsushima. Based in Japan, the game revolves around the story of Atsu, who is returning to her hometown after 16 years in order to avenge the death of her family. According to the storyline, Atsu’s family was killed by a group of mercenaries called Yotei Six.

The developers have also added references to Japanese myths and legends. For example, Atsu is said to be an Onryo, which is a spirit that is driven by wrath and thirst for revenge. The game Ghost of Yotei showcases that as Atsu moves ahead in her journey, her ghost legend only grows, which unlocks more enemies as the game proceeds.

In the game, players will also need to find hidden clues in certain areas in order to level up their character. They can also stumble upon secret locations named “Altars of Reflection” where Atsu can develop a new skill. Apart from this, the weapons arsenal is also varied. Users will get options like a Kataana, spears, kusarigama, odachi, and dual swords as weapons. Every weapon also comes with a personality of its own.

Ghost of Yotei: What We Learned

The gameplay trailer of Ghost of Yotei showcases enhanced graphics over Ghost of Tsushima. With a similar Samurai vibe to the whole setting, Ghost of Yotei is also an open-world combat game which allows users to explore the “Edge of Japan.” The trailer also showcased multiple weather and climate conditions, along with combat sequences that will definitely shoot up the adrenaline.

We can also move back in time with the click of a button, allowing Atsu to instantly reminisce about things before tragedy struck and her family was attacked by the Yotei Six. The gameplay trailer also indicates a long story-line with multiple stages in Atsu’s journey to avenge her family’s death.

Ghost of Yotei: PS5 Bundle Announced

Apart from announcing the game, Sony has also announced a limited edition PlayStation 5 Ghost of Yotei bundle with the game. The limited edition PS5 will feature a themed design with Mount Yōtei on the console, and a silhouette of Atsu on the touch panel of the DualSense controller. The limited edition console also features a special maker’s seal which is engraved with PlayStation shapes on the back of the console’s top cover as well as on the controllers.

The PS5 Ghost of Yotei bundle will be available globally, and is inspired by Kintsugi, a traditional Japanese art form which repairs broken ceramics with lacquer and gold. You will be able to buy the limited edition PS5 console from direct.playstation.com starting October 2, 2025. Pre-orders will be announced soon, Sony said in a blog post.
