The last few Google search engine updates haven’t been easy, especially on smaller websites. While the Alphabet-owned search giant released core updates in March 2024 and August 2024, it is bound to release another system-wide update, most likely in the first quarter of 2025.

Google Two Core Search Updates Weren’t Received Well

Google's AI-Powered Future: 4 Ways Search Might Change In 2025

According to a report by rebelmouse.com, publishers have reported traffic fluctuations, particularly in September 2024. Google made it clear that it focuses on high-quality, evergreen content that is based on the expertise, experience, and trustworthiness of authors.

While websites with good authority didn’t experience a significant difference, those with spammy or AI-generated content experienced a drastic shift in traffic. The latest update focuses more on the quality of search results by showing more content that people find genuinely helpful.

AI Overviews Shows Summaries On SERPs, Reducing Traffic For Website

Further, the AI Overviews feature has had a negative impact on search traffic, as readers check the information in the overview section without visiting a website. While websites have had a hard time adjusting to the changes, Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai has hinted editorials about an upcoming shift in the search paradigm.

In a recent interview, Google’s CEO, Sundar Pichai, said that “Search itself will continue to change profoundly in [2025].” In addition, the top executive confirmed that Google would be able to tackle more complex questions than ever before. The new changes will come in place to search in early 2025.

Here’s How Google Search Could Change In 2025

“I think you’ll be surprised even early in [2025] the kind of newer things search can do compared to where it is today,” Pichai added. Although Pichai didn’t mention the exact details of the changes, we think that there’s a hint in what we said at the interview.

Better Contextual Awareness

Given that the CEO mentioned “complex questions,” we can speculate that the search engine will gain a deeper contextual understanding. In 2025, Google Search should be able to comprehend the nuances of complex queries, which will take into account the intent and underlying meaning behind the user’s search to help them with better responses.

Improved AI Overviews

Further, the AI Overviews feature might get an update, which will showcase a more comprehensive and informative response that combines information from several sources and presents them in an organized manner.

Deeper Gemini Integration In Google Search

Given that Gemini is getting more and more conversational with every update, we believe that Google Search could get more conversational. Further, AI Overviews might include real-time information from the regular Google feed.

Push For Voice-Based Search

Last but not least, Google could push for a semantic search instead of a traditional keyword-based search. For this, Google would have to focus on the meaning and the context of the word said by the user (instead of the keyboard-based inputs).

What Google Search’s core update entails is in the depths of the future. However, we’re sure that the upcoming search update will be significant.
