TL; DR
  • In November 2024, Instagram rolled out a feature that lets users reset their content recommendations.
You can follow a few simple steps to start fresh on the social media platform and reset the suggested content.

The Meta-owned social media platform Instagram suggests content based on users’ activity and connections. Ever noticed how the platform starts showing posts and reels related to a particular topic after you watched and liked a similar Reel? That’s how the Explore page algorithm works: it figures out what you like and then shows you related content pieces.

But what if users want a fresh start? Is there a way to reset the Explore page feed to get rid of too many food videos (or conspiracy videos, for that matter) from your Instagram Explore feed? Turns out, there is. In November 2024, Instagram rolled out a feature that lets users reset their content recommendations and, in the process, clean their Explore feed for good.

How To Reset Suggested Content On Instgram?

Follow the steps given below to reset your Instagram Explore feed.

  1. Open Instagram and tap the profile button in the bottom right corner.
  2. Hit the Menu button (the hamburger icon) in the top right corner.
  3. Scroll down until you find the “What you see” section and select “Suggested content.”
How To Reset Suggested Content On Instagram?
  1. In the “Content preferences” menu, you’ll see your preferences saved as “interested” and “not interested.” However, to reset your Instagram Explore feed, tap the “Reset suggested content” option.
  2. The next screen shows you some pointers about resetting the Instagram feed. Go through them and select “Next” at the bottom of the screen.
  3. As the next step, you’ll be asked to review who you follow and enter your ad preferences. Make the required changes (if any), then tap on the “Reset suggested content” at the bottom of the screen.

This will reset your Instagram Explore feed, and the platform will show you random, trendy content from scratch. In other words, it will reset the algorithm for your account, forget about the type of content you viewed and engaged with the most, and start showing new posts and reels on your Explore page to see what resonates with you.

Things To Keep In Mind Before Resetting Suggested Content On Instagram

However, Instagram also notes that users might start seeing suggestions about topics different from what they usually see. Although a reset can’t be undone, the suggestions will become more personalized as you like, share, and interact with posts. It is important to mention that resetting the content preferences doesn’t automatically change who you follow on Instagram (you must do it manually).

Last but not least, resetting the content preferences on Instagram doesn’t delete a user’s data. Instead, it stops using the data collected so far to suggest posts or reels in the Explore section.
