IMAX experience will now be available on your smartphones and TVs as Disney+ has confirmed that it will be introducing an expanded IMAX Enhanced feature for Marvel Movies streaming on Disney+Hotstar App. The new IMAX aspect ratio will be applicable for 13 Marvel Movies starting November 12.

What does this mean?

The arrival of the new 1.90:1 IMAX aspect ratio will allow content to appear up to 26% taller than the typical 2.35:1 widescreen format in Marvel films. Disney says that it will mean reduced black bars on the top and bottom, while you are watching scenes shot in IMAX. The expanded aspect ratio will thus allow you to enjoy Marvel’s action sequences with a pop on the larger real estate.

IMAX Enhanced content, however, isn’t the same as the traditional IMAX aspect ratio of 1.85:1, which is squarer in comparison.

Anyways, the newly IMAX Enhanced certified movies will get a prominent label on their Disney+ screens and users will be able to choose the standard widescreen version of the films.

“Disney, Marvel Studios, and IMAX have collaborated for years to bring the world’s most popular films to the big screen, and on Friday we’ll start to bring IMAX technology to subscribers with IMAX Enhanced viewing. We are thrilled to create new value for Marvel fans and audiences on Disney+ and we’re looking forward to the offering, even more, IMAX Enhanced functionality in the future,” said Disney+ President Michael Paull.

“IMAX, Disney, and Marvel Studios are giving the fans what they want: the most immersive viewing experience throughout the life of a Marvel Studios film, from exclusive theatrical release to the library at-home where they can now watch the Avengers assemble with more picture than ever before.” Added Rich Gelfond, CEO of IMAX.
