EU Users Can Delete These Five System Apps In iOS 18.2

On Wednesday, Apple released iOS 18.2 for developers. Out of all the other features, which include a couple of additions to Apple Intelligence, the update allows the deletion of the core system apps, including the App Store, Safari, Camera, Messages, and Photos.
It is important to mention here that these apps are a part of the core iOS experience. Apple has never, for once, allowed to delete or entirely remove these apps from their iPhones. Yes, users can hide them or stop using them, but they can’t uninstall the app from their handset, like other third-party apps available on the App Store.

The Digital Markets Act Compelled Apple To Do So

But why would Apple do so? In order to sell its devices in the European Union, the company has to comply with the new norms set forth by the Digital Markets Act. The rule requires Apple (and other tech giants) to allow users to delete a system app if they don’t want to use it or prefer an alternative.
Further, iOS 18.2 adds a menu that allows users to select their default apps for email, messaging, calling, call filtering, web browsing, managing passwords, and keyboards. The Settings app now contains an option to store the Apple App Store if someone wants to use it again.
From all the changes, it looks like iOS 18.2 is a bit different for European Union users than it is for the rest of the world.

iOS 18.2’s ChatGPT Has An October 2023 Knowledge Cutoff
With iOS 18.2, Apple has released a couple of new Apple Intelligence features, one of them being ChatGPT integration. However, earlier today, an X user highlighted that the language model’s database is limited to October 2023. Hence, if a user asks it a question about, let’s say, an ongoing current affairs topic or something like that, the tool is most likely to rely on secondary tools to provide information.
