The iPhone 15 Pro Max is the marque when it comes to photography. It boasts a 5x optical zoom onboard the new periscope camera that can shoot up to 120mm shots with a 1.12 micron pixel size, f/2.8 aperture behind the 12MP sensor. Well, Apple is calling it ‘tetraprism periscope’ designed to resolve the current-gen space constraints on periscope sensors. Turns out the iPhone 16 Pro will gain the aforementioned tetraprism periscope next year.

The information comes from Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo teasing how the iPhone 15 Pro Max’s marquee feature will trickle down to iPhone 16 Pro giving it an edge compared to the iPhone 15 Pro Max.

Having a tetraprism periscope sensor resolves the ongoing space constraint on smartphones. Periscope sensors usually require a lot of space which is not possible on a smartphone. The tetraprism periscope sensor places mirrors so that the light path coming from the subject towards the sensor is bent four times before incidenting on the sensor by making a roundabout route within a confined space.

Apple rolled out the iPhone 15 series with some state-of-the-art photography chops. It can shoot photos in 48MP HEIC format and has proven its caliber towards photo enthusiasts. Apple is using a 48MP main camera to make the most of the shots. A larger sensor allows more light, depth, and color for nicer bokeh and dim shots. It is paired with a second-gen image stabilization that counteracts any shaky or jerky motions.

iPhone 15 Pro Max rolled out with a pit stop of up to 5x optical zoom at 120mm focal length. It is still short of 10x optical zoom on rivals such as Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra. The Cupertino-based giant added a new lens coating on the sensors across the series to minimize lens far often fed by streetlights, sun, or any bright light source.

As usual, the upcoming iPhones will use current-gen tech with the tetraprism periscope likely to arrive on the iPhone 16 Pro. We did a roundup on the iPhone 16 series that you can read here. It goes on to show what we expect from the next year’s series as of what we know today.
