Lenovo is set to release its first laptop featuring the Snapdragon X Elite chip, the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 14.5” edition. This laptop is drawing attention for its slim design and fanless operation, though the latter is not confirmed. The leaked images, shared by WalkingCat on X (Twitter), reveal a sleek design with no visible vents.

The user says that the laptop is the Lenovo Yoga Slim 14.5” 2024 Snapdragon edition. It is clear that the laptop will sport a 14.5-inch display, but further details about the display are still a mystery. The battery capacity and other details are also yet to be known.

Qualcomm, however, is making bold claims about the efficiency of its Snapdragon X Elite chip, suggesting it can match the performance of an Intel 13th Gen CPU while using 68% to 74% less power. This means that some Windows laptops can finally be fanless, just the MacBook Air powered by Apple Silicon.

While we don’t have any information on the performance of the Lenovo Yoga Slim yet, we can see that the laptop’s promotional images showcase the Microsoft Copilot, indicating that this could very well be called an “AI PC.”

For the uninitiated, the “AI PC” is a certification from Microsoft that’s only given to a computer with at least 16 GB of RAM and 40 TOPS (Trillion Operations Per Second) processing power.

The Snapdragon X Elite’s Hexagon NPU can deliver 45 TOPS, exceeding Microsoft’s minimum requirements. In comparison, AMD’s Ryzen Pro 8000 series, even in its desktop variants, falls short with a maximum of 39 TOPS.

The inclusion of the Hexagon NPU in the Snapdragon X Elite chip allows the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 to handle various AI tasks locally, without relying heavily on cloud services.

This could be a key selling point, as local AI processing often offers better privacy and faster performance compared to cloud-based solutions. We could see many more Snapdragon X Elite laptops with the “AI PC” certification in the foreseeable future.

Additionally, Samsung is reportedly working on a 14” laptop featuring the Snapdragon X Elite chip. Other laptop OEMs are also working on their models of the Snapdragon X Elite chip, including Microsoft.

You heard it right, Microsoft is also expected to launch Snapdragon-powered Surface tablets and laptops, indicating a growing trend towards ARM-based computing in the laptop market.

The Snapdragon X Elite chip is bound to bring a revolution in the PC industry with its high performance and, more importantly, high efficiency just like the Apple Silicon. The shift from x86-based chips to Arm-based chips is the future. Although the initial prices may be high, we expect them to get lower over time.
