TL; DR
- Meta has launched Instagram Plus at $3.99/month, Facebook Plus at $3.99/month, and WhatsApp Plus at $2.99/month globally.
- Pricing in India is officially unconfirmed across all three plans.
- Meta plans to consolidate all subscriptions under a Meta One umbrella subscription in the future.
Meta has spent around two decades telling us that its social media platforms, Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, will always be free. While the apps remain free, Meta now wants to charge you for additional features you might be interested in.
The company has officially launched Instagram Plus, Facebook Plus, and WhatsApp Plus globally, which is its most significant push into consumer subscriptions yet. Naomi Gleit, Meta’s head of product, confirmed the limited rollout, which would expand to other regions soon.

Before we move ahead, I’d also like to mention here that Meta doesn’t plan to stop here. Eventually, all the plans will be brought together under a single programme called Meta One, offering access to all the individual subscriptions at a discounted price.
Meta’s Subscription Prices: Confirmed Rates (United States)
| Subscription | Monthly price (USD) | Approx. India price | India confirmed |
| Instagram Plus | $3.99 | ₹99 (via The Print) | No |
| Facebook Plus | $3.99 | Not available | No |
| WhatsApp Plus | $2.99 | Not available | No |
What Do The Subscriptions Actually Offer?
Instagram Plus is the most feature-rich of the three subscriptions. Subscribers can see how many times their Stories have been rewatched, preview someone else’s Story without appearing on their viewer list (which could be one of the most popular features), create unlimited audience lists beyond Close Friends, extend a Story beyond the standard 24-hour limit, and spotlight one Story per week for additional reach.

The last three features, I feel, could really help Instagram-based creators or influencers, which is a growing number these days. Facebook Plus offers similar profile expression and audience control tools, while WhatsApp Plus leans into personalisation (it has already been out for a while now), custom themes, premium stickers, personalised ringtones, additional pinned chats, and expanded list management.
What About The Indian Pricing And Availability?
For now, Meta has not officially confirmed the Indian pricing for any of the three subscriptions. However, according to The Print, Instagram Plus costs ₹99 per month in the country, with an inaugural six-month offer bringing it down to ₹49. At the same time, it’s important to mention here that no other publication has confirmed this figure.
As for why Meta is releasing the subscription tiers, the answer isn’t very hard to find. Advertising revenue has been under immense regulatory scrutiny lately, especially for consumer targeting techniques. In addition, AI infrastructure costs are rising sharply.

Furthermore, Meta seems to have taken inspiration from Snapchat and how the platform’s Snapchat+ subscription has already gathered 25 million subscribers. I’d say that Meta is quite late to this model of charging users for additional and interesting stats.
