Tech giant Apple started a new era in technology when it introduced Satellite Connectivity with its iPhone14 models in 2022. Although Apple was the first to bring such a feature to smartphones, Android does not wish to remain far behind. CES 2023 has seen chipmaker Qualcomm announce a Snapdragon Satellite that will bring similar features to Next-generation premium Android devices. It is a two-way satellite messaging service that has been made possible due to the partnership of Qualcomm with Iridium (as it operates a 66-strong Low Earth orbit satellite constellation. Iridium’s biggest competitor is Globalstar, which is Apple’s partner for the satellite service.

How will Snapdragon Satellite work?

The Snapdragon Satellite will support 2-way messaging for emergency use, SMS texting, and other messaging apps. Qualcomm has clarified that it is not just for emergencies but can be used for recreation in remote, rural, and offshore locations. The 2-way communication is the main difference between Snapdragon Satellite and Apple’s Satellite connectivity. Qualcomm claims that it is the world’s first satellite-based solution that will support 2-way communication. “Kicking off in premium smartphones later this year, this new addition to our Snapdragon platform strongly positions us to enable satellite communication capabilities and service offerings across multiple device categories,” said Durga Malladi, Senior VP & GM, cellular models and infrastructure, Qualcomm.

Which Android devices will support Snapdragon Satellite?

The Snapdragon Satellite will be supported by next-generation Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset devices. It will be available in select regions starting in 2nd half of 2023. The recently launched OnePlus 11 5G, and the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S23 Series will feature this satellite connectivity.  It might slowly expand to devices like laptops, tablets, cars, and home products in the future. OEMs and app makers might also offer unique branded services making use of satellite connectivity. The satellite will support 5G Non-Terrestrial Networks when it goes official.

Which brand(s) have confirmed their partnership with Snapdragon Satellite?

Leading watchmaker Garmin has already confirmed its collaboration with Qualcomm for supporting emergency messaging. “Garmin welcomes the opportunity to expand our proven satellite emergency response services to millions of new smartphone users globally. Garmin Response supports thousands of SOS incidents each year and has likely saved many lives in the process, and we are looking forward to collaborating with Qualcomm Technologies and Iridium to help people connect to emergency services no matter where life takes them,” Brad Trenkle, VP of Garmin’s outdoor segment said.
