Samsung has officially unveiled the Exynos 1480 SoC, which powers the Galaxy A55 5G (review), a mid-range smartphone that came out earlier this month. Revealing the chipset’s specifications, Samsung Semiconductor mentions that it is more than 20 percent efficient and up to 18 percent faster than the Exynos 1380 SoC. But does the overall performance justify the smartphone’s price? Let’s find out.

Exynos 1480 SoC Brings Significant Improvements In Efficiency And Multi-Core Performance

Exynos 1480 SoC specifications

Let’s begin with the improvements in the fabrication technology that make the Exynos 1480 SoC more efficient. Unlike its 5nm predecessor, the latest processor is based on Samsung’s 4nm manufacturing process, which makes it 22 percent more power efficient. This should benefit the Galaxy A55’s overall battery life.

In terms of CPU, the Eyxnos 1480 SoC comes with four Cortex-A78 performance cores clocked at 2.75GHz (up from 2.4GHz on the Exynos 1380 SoC) and four Cortex-A55 efficiency cores clocked at 2.0GHz. The increase in the maximum clock speed results in better performance. As claimed by the company, the new chipset is about 13 percent faster in launching apps and 18 faster in multi-core performance.

Graphics Performance Improved By Over 50 Percent

With respect to graphics, the Galaxy A55 5G features a new Xclipse 530 GPU, which is based on AMD’s RDNA technology. Although the GPU doesn’t support ray tracing like other flagship models, it supports higher resolutions and variable refresh rates. Samsung claims that the Xclipse 530 GPU is about 53 percent better than the Mali G68 MP5 GPU on the Galaxy A54 5G, which is a huge jump. Apart from this, the official webpage also mentions significant improvements in AI performance.

Other features include support for 4K video recording at 60 frames per second, a 200MP single camera, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth v5.3, and a maximum refresh rate of 144Hz.

What Do Benchmark Scores Say?

Exynos 1480 SoC benchmark scores

According to nanoreview.net, the Exynos 1480 SoC on the Galaxy A55 5G scores about 723K points on the Antutu 10 benchmark, while the Exynos 1380 SoC scores about 594K points. This shows an improvement of over 20 percent in the benchmark score. Further, Geekbench 6 scores also suggest a 17 percent improvement in single-core and 27 percent in multi-core scores, which is pretty impressive. Regarding Compute Score (GPU), the newer chipset takes the lead by 36 percent.

Is Exynos 1480 The Best Chipset In Its Segment?

Inferring from the Antutu and Geekbench scores, the Exynos 1480 SoC provides a significant upgrade over last year’s Exynos 1380 SoC, especially for casual gamers. However, compared to other chipsets in the segment, the Exynos 1480 SoC feels slightly underpowered. The Galaxy A55 5G’s base variant, with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, costs Rs. 39,999 (excluding any offers).

At this price, one can get the iQoo Neo 9 Pro’s top variant with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. The phone runs on Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, which is leaps and bounds ahead of the Exynos 1480 SoC. Similarly, smartphones like the OnePlus 12R and Nothing Phone (2) also offer a more capable chipset for a lesser price.
