Qualcomm is set to unveil its next flagship mobile processor, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, in October. However, it seems the company has been unable to keep the chip under wraps. Following earlier leaks on benchmarks and potential clients, a detailed datasheet has now surfaced, offering a clearer picture of what to expect.

SM8750 and SM8750P – Two Variants, Different Focus

It seems like Qualcomm is sticking to its recent naming convention, with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 coming in standard (SM8750) and performance (SM8750P) variants. While the standard chip will power a wide range of flagship smartphones from brands like Xiaomi, Vivo, OPPO, OnePlus, iQOO, Honor, Asus, and ZTE, the performance version is expected to be exclusive to Samsung for its Galaxy S25 Ultra.

Efficiency Over Raw Power – TSMC’s advanced 3nm process, Oryon CPU

Contrary to expectations of a massive boost in raw CPU performance, the leaked datasheet suggests Qualcomm is prioritizing efficiency with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4. Built on TSMC’s advanced 3nm process, the chip will feature Qualcomm’s custom Oryon CPU cores, which were previously seen in the Snapdragon X Elite/Plus laptop CPUs.

AI Takes Center Stage

Qualcomm’s heavy investment in AI with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 continues with the 8 Gen 4. The chipset will feature a dedicated Low Power Artificial Intelligence (LPAI) subsystem, including an eNPU (DSP Artificial Intelligence Accelerator), to power always-on audio, camera, and sensor features. This Qualcomm Sensing Hub (QSH) will be key to delivering on-device generative AI capabilities.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 is expected to feature a 2+6 core configuration, with two performance cores clocked at 4.0GHz and six efficiency cores at 2.8GHz. Other key components include the Adreno 830 GPU, Qualcomm Spectra ISP for improved camera capabilities, and the Qualcomm FastConnect 7900 modem with support for Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4.

Xiaomi is rumored to be the first to launch a smartphone powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, with the Xiaomi 15 series expected to debut in China as early as October.

The full picture of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 will become clear when Qualcomm officially unveils the chip at the Snapdragon Summit 2024 on October 21st.
