TL; DR
  • Sony FX5 starts at ₹5,09,990 for the body-only FX5B.
  • The FX5 kit with an XLR handle costs ₹5,61,990, with the handle at ₹ 81,990.
  • Open Gate, internal X-OCN RAW, and 5K at 60fps headline the camera.

I have a soft spot for cameras, especially those that shrink the rig without shrinking what it can actually do. Sony has launched an entire product lineup on that idea. This is news for anyone who shoots films, documentaries, or even wedding reels for a living. Fair warning: the price could make you look twice, so be prepared.

Sony FX5: Price & Availability

The FX5, a full-frame camera in Sony’s Cinema Line range, is already available at the company’s authorized retailers, including Sony outlets, Sony Camera Lounge, Alpha Flagship stores, Sony Center, and the official website.

Here comes the more important part. The FX5 costs ₹5,61,990 and ships with the XLR-H2 handle unit. The body-only FX5B variant costs ₹5,09,990. Here is the math that might interest you. If you buy the XLR-H2 separately, it costs ₹1,33,990.

In other words, buying the body and handle apart costs ₹6,43,980, which is ₹81,990 more than the bundle’s price. That’s Sony making a great case for people who need both modules.

Sony FX5: Key Features, Explained

For me, Open Gate recording is the headline feature, even more so because it’s a first for Sony’s FX series. That mode reads the full 3:2 area of the sensor. So you capture more picture than a standard widescreen frame, giving you enormous headroom for post-production in both horizontal and vertical formats.

It pairs with internal 16-bit X-OCN RAW, Sony’s compressed RAW format with LT, C1 and C2 options. Video recording options include up to 5K at 60fps, 4K at 120fps, or Full HD at 240fps, which should be more than enough for both professional and passion projects. Low-light performance also improves.

The sensor offers three base ISO settings of 800, 4000, and 12800. Then there’s a new Dual Gain Shooting mode that cuts noise without compromising the shadow details. Autofocus on the FX5 uses AI-based human pose estimation to track the eyes, head, and body, and Sony says it works in day scenes as well.

Meanwhile, five-axis in-body stabilization widens roll correction and delivers substantially better stabilization, especially in hand-held footage. Those who shoot run-and-gun documentaries could really benefit from this. Finally, for long shooting days, a fan in a separate air chamber handles cooling. The body is also dust- and moisture-resistant.
