Sony is one such brand that is known for its audio products whether they are TWS or headphones. The brand has a hugely popular WF and WH series of buds and over-ear headphones. Last we saw Sony WF-1000XM4 earbuds that come with high-quality audio and a compact design. Now, there have been rumors about the next in the series which will be Sony WF-1000XM5 TWS buds, expected to launch in the coming months.

Let us have a look at what we know so far and what is expected out of the upcoming Sony WF-1000XM5.

Is there really a Sony WF-1000XM5 on the cards?

Sony has been launching new audio devices for the last two years and although there have been reports that the brand might decide to refresh the flagship lineup, looking at the popularity of the Sony WF-1000XM4, chances are extremely high that Sony will launch the WF-1000XM5 in the coming months.

Sony WF-1000XM5: Expected launch date

Sony WF-1000XM4

Sony recently launched the LinkBuds S in India and since the brand always launches a WF1000 series during the summer months, this time it might launch the WF-1000XM5 series sometime around June to August 2024. To recap, the Sony WF-1000XM3 series launched on 5 August 2019 while the Sony WF-1000XM4 series launched on June 8, 2021.

Sony WF-1000XM5: Expected features

Design

The Sony WF-1000XM5 is expected to follow the same design language as the WF-1000XM4. The upcoming TWS is said to have a rounded design that will be comfortable to be worn for longer durations.

Specs

The Sony WF-1000XM5 is said to have superior ANC and isolation capabilities. Just like its predecessor, the upcoming one will have a good bass boost and include a proprietary DSEE extreme feature. The Sony WF-1000XM5 is said to come with Bluetooth 5.3, longer battery life, and more seamless connectivity. It will support almost all Bluetooth codecs including LE audio and LC3 codecs. There will be support for LDAC codec as well. Battery life is expected to be somewhere around 24-25 hours.

The Sony WF-1000XM5 is also expected to have support for spatial audio with Sony’s 360 Reality Audio which is supported by Tidal, Deezer, and Amazon Music HD streaming services. The headphones connect app is also expected to get better as it will come with more customizations.

Sony WF-1000XM5: Expected Price

Sony WF1000XM4

The Sony WF-1000XM5 is expected to be a premium-grade TWS with a price tag of around 399 USD. The price is being speculated based on the rising price tag of the last few WH devices. Sony priced WF-1000XM3 at 230 USD and the price has increased to 349 USD for the Sony WH-100XM4, so the price of the WF-1000XM5 might increase as well.

Sony WF-1000XM5: What do we want?

While the Sony WF-1000XM4 comes with premium-grade features for a competitive price point, there is still a little room for improvement that its successor might build upon. A pair of extra small ear tips will make the experience even better as a large ear tip doesn’t seal the ear canal perfectly. Microphone quality can be improved upon along with providing Bluetooth 5.3 connectivity. An IP rating of IPX5 or higher will protect the buds against sweat and everyday splashes. Multipoint Bluetooth connection is one more aspect that will make the buds capable.
