Sony WH-1000XM6: Key Features & Specifications

Sony WH-1000XM6 QN3 processor

To begin with, the WH-1000XM6 features 30mm driver units with a high-rigidity carbon fiber composite dome and a uniquely developed voice coil structure, providing richer vocals and clearer instruments.

Under the hood, the headphones feature the new HD Noise Canceling Processor QN3, which offers seven times the processing speed of XM5’s chip. Along with 12 microphones at its disposal (1.5 times more than the XM5), a faster noise-cancelling chip, a new Adaptive NC Optimizer, and a slightly increased clamping force, the headphones deliver an improved noise-cancellation experience.

The Auto Ambient Sound Mode also benefits from the sound processor’s speed, as it is better at adapting to the surroundings in real-time, balancing music and external sounds. You can also adjust the feature’s settings in the Sony Sound Connect application available on both the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store (which also includes a 10-band equalizer, the Background Music Effect, Game EQ, and 360 Reality Audio Upmix for Cinema).

Even though the headphones feature a total of 12 microphones, they use six beamforming microphones to isolate your voice from the background, providing clear audio calls (along with the AI-optimized noise reduction algorithm). The headphones also support High-Resolution Audio and High-Resolution Audio Wireless, thanks to LDAC. Then there’s Edge-AI and DSEE Extreme, which upscales the compressed digital music files in real-time.

Additional features of the headphone include support for LE Audio, Auracast, multi-point connectivity, automatic switching between connected devices, and Scene-Based Listening, which uses sensing technology to automatically play music according to your activity. While you get touch controls on the right ear cup, the headphones also support wear detection, head gestures, and automatic Speak-to-Chat.

Out of the box, the Sony WH-1000XM6 claims to provide up to 40 hours of music playback time with noise cancellation off and up to 30 hours with noise cancellation enabled. Stay tuned for a detailed review of the headphones.
