Tensor G3 To Bring Upgraded CPU and GPU, says latest leaks

Google’s upcoming chipset – Tensor G3, just got featured in leaks that gives all-around information about it. Tensor G3 will get a nine-core CPU, 10-core GPU, and faster RAM among others as the latest leaks suggest.

Tensor G2 fell flat to impress when it comes to its CPU performance as the cores were two-gen old. With the Tensor G3 (codenamed Zuma), things will be different as Google is opting for a nine-core CPU in a 4+4+1 configuration using the 2022 ARMv9 cores. It is certain that the latest flagship chipsets using ARMv9.2 cores will outmuscle it, however, getting to ARMv9 cores is itself a victory for the G3.

The chipset will bring onboard a single Cortex-X3 high-performance core clocked at 3.0GHz. Plus, it will have 4x Cortex-A715 cores at 2.45GHz and 4x Cortex-A510 cores at 2.15GHz. You can spot a consistent upgrade compared to both G1 and G2 chipsets.

Moreover, the SoC will use ARM’s Memory Tagging Extensions (MTE) that protect the chipset from memory-based attacks. Although the feature is available across Android, Pixel 8 will be the first to unlock it. Additionally, G3 will finally move on from a 32-bit to 64-bit code execution and there’s ray tracing support as well.

Tensor G3

GPU onboard Tensor G3 is reportedly consisting of 10-core Mali-G715 “immortalis” variants that will have beefy outputs in terms of graphics and neural network applications. Again, it won’t be difficult to outpace Tensor G3’s GPU compared to current flagship chipsets, the chipset is still way better than its predecessors that we have used across the Pixel 7 lineup.

Tensor uses Samsung Multi-Function Codex (MFC) IP block as a hybrid architecture for videos. With the Tensor G3 onboard, the chipset will be the first to support AV1 thanks to Google’s BigOcean HW video decoder that will support up to 4K@60 AV1 video decoding. There’s also max support of 8K@30 video encoding/decoding at H.264 and HEVC.

Moving further, Tensor was built to cater to Google’s AI features and G3 won’t be any different. G3 is predicted to arrive with a new TPU dubbed as ‘Rio’ clocked at 1.1GHz. It will be faster than G1’s Abrolhos and G2’s Janeiro which were clocked at 1.0GHz each. There are no specific details available w.r.t. the performance although we can expect a considerable upgrade sighting the previous generation.

Tensor G3 Featuring Faster UFS Memory

Both Tensor G1 and G2 opted for UFS 3.1 speeds. With the G3 incoming, Google will be using Samsung’s UFS 4.0 storage which is a major upgrade over 3.1 with an improved speed and efficiency of 50% as per theoretical values. UFS 4.0 has become mainstream on the latest flagships such as Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, Xiaomi 13, and OnePlus 11 among others.

Google Pixel 8 series is expected to make its debut this October just like the previous generation of devices. Both vanilla Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro will pack in Tensor G3 SoC probably with all and more upgrades mentioned above. It will compete against the likes of other flagship devices from Xiaomi, OnePlus, and Samsung among others. Hopefully, the speculative chipset upgrade will work in favor of the Pixel 8 series.
