Finally, a few months after its announcement, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) rolled out UPI Lite in India. UPI Lite will have the same working principles as UPI but it will be quicker and easy to use. On top of that, UPI Lite users can also make payments without any internet connection which helps in tackling issues related to downtime and peak hours. As for UPI Lite, instead of the way UPI’s direct connection principle with a bank account to complete a payment, the Lite version will be more like an on-device wallet.

In the UPI Lite Wallet, you can add money directly and send it instantly to anyone you want, with or without the internet. As we know that it is a wallet, you will be supposed to add funds to it while being connected to the internet. Another major thing to highlight here is that the person you are sending the money to will not be able to get it if they don’t have internet access. In the future, RBI has suggested that they will make the complete operation offline, but surely the same is going to take time.

There Won't Be Any Charges on UPI Payments, Says MoF

As of now, the maximum limit of funds that you can store, transfer, or receive from the UPI Lite wallet is only Rs 2,000. At a time, you will be able to transfer Rs 200 in a single go. Nonetheless, you can make multiple transactions in a day for all the low-value payments. This will also reduce the requirement of carrying lost cash.

The UPI Lite wallet is available as of now on the BHIM application and you can add funds and use them from there. Currently, eight banks support the feature including HDFC Bank, Utkarsh Small Finance Bank, Canara Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, State Bank of India, Union Bank of India, Punjab National Bank, and Indian Bank. Expectations are that more banks will support the feature in the upcoming days.
