MIUI, now HyperOS, has been a double-edged sword for Xiaomi. Although this feature-heavy Android skin earned it many accolades, it frustrated many users with system-wide ads, which were its monetization streams. However, new developments could indicate that Xiaomi is indeed listening to customer feedback.

The company is testing a new HyperOS feature that allows users to disable all system-wide ads with a toggle button. Xiaomi’s business model happens to rely on keeping hardware prices low. It makes up for this by depending on several methods to rake in cash, including in-app advertising.

One of the Long-Standing User Pain Points

Previously, disabling ads on Xiaomi phones involved navigating a labyrinthine path through menus and settings. Users had to disable multiple options scattered across the system, making the process tedious and time-consuming. This complexity often led users to third-party solutions or online guides, raising concerns about security and potential bloatware.

HyperOS Ads toggle

If implemented, the new toggle button would streamline this process significantly. Users would have clear control over their ad experience. The single-toggle solution could be a win-win for both Xiaomi and its users. Users who prioritize a clean, ad-free experience can easily opt out, while Xiaomi can continue to generate ad revenue from users who don’t mind the occasional ads.

Details about the feature’s rollout are scarce. It’s unclear whether this toggle button is added permanently or is being tested for a limited time in some regions. But it has been found working inside a test build on the Xiaomi 13 Pro, the company’s last-generation flagship smartphone.
