In an attempt to mitigate the spread of fake news, Musk has announced new rules for the monetization program.
Posts Marked With Community Notes Aren’t Eligible For Monetization Anymore
Elon Musk, on October 29, 2023, announced a “slight change” to the creator monetization on X. Going forward, any posts that Community Notes correct won’t be eligible for monetization, implying that the author won’t get a share of the revenue on the post. The idea behind this, per Musk, is to prioritize “accuracy over sensationalism.”
Shortly after Musk tweeted the change, users criticized it, saying that a group of people can easily target someone even though they post something factually correct. A user who goes by the username @simonateba writes that Community Notes is being misused for targetting conservative accounts, and hence, demonetizing posts with notes might not be a good idea.
In a follow-up tweet, Musk also mentioned that attempts to correct someone’s post deliberately or “weaponize Community Notes to demonetize people” won’t work, as X works on open-source code. The new rule comes to discourage disinformation or false information on X.
What Is Community Notes On X?
Community Notes is a crowd-sourced method of checking the accuracy of a tweet. Basically, it allows other X users to correct information or add some context to a tweet. If enough contributors find the same remark helpful, X shows it along with the post so that users don’t believe or spread false information.
