TL; DR
- WhatsApp is rolling out four new group chat features.
- Messages can be pinned permanently, and you can send history after joining.
- Group Status and a mentions-and-replies filter round out the update.
Open a busy WhatsApp group after a day, and you already know what I am talking about. Hundreds of unread messages, twice as many emojis and GIFs, a plan that changed at least three times, and an argument you missed entirely (for good). WhatsApp has noticed the same problem, and it’s finally doing something about it.

What Four Group Chat Features Is WhatsApp Adding?
The four WhatsApp group chat updates are built to help you pick up where you left off. Pins no longer expire so a message can stay put at the top of the chat forever. You can also send recent message history to someone after they’ve joined by tapping their name.
Then there’s this new feature called Group Status. It lets you share casual updates with the group you choose. Everyone in the group can view, react, and post their own status as well.

Finally, a new filter surfaces unread group conversations where you were mentioned or replied to, including messages that tag everyone (with the @all tag).
| Feature | How it works |
| Permanent pins | Keep important messages pinned forever instead of choosing a time limit |
| History after joining | Tap a member’s name to send recent messages retroactively; end-to-end encrypted |
| Group Status | Share updates with one group; members can view, react, and add their own; disappears after 24 hours |
| Mentions and replies filter | Shows unread group conversations where you were mentioned or replied to, including @all |

What’s Different From Before, And What’s Still Unclear?
Pins used to expire after 24 hours, seven days, or 30 days; those were the only options for WhatsApp group chats. Earlier this year, WhatsApp also let you send history while adding someone, through a toggle.
So, the new option fixes the “oops, I forgot” moment. Group Status exists so the running club’s update doesn’t land in the family chat.
| Detail | Status |
| Four features | Announced by WhatsApp |
| Rollout dates and regions | Not shared |
| Retroactive history | Messages stay end-to-end encrypted |
| Who can send history | Not specified in WhatsApp’s post |
Out of all the new features, permanent pins are my favorite. They basically turn a chaotic group into something closer to a notice board until the plan is executed or the task is complete.
