Google has rolled out a new feature for the Google Photos App. The ‘Ask Photos’ feature was first talked about during I/O 2024 and it has now been made available for select users in the United States. Google Photos is a very useful app that stores countless memories in the form of photos and videos. Sometimes when you have thousands of photographs and want to find some specific ones, it proves to be a hassle. The new ‘Ask Photos’ feature helps users look for specific photos and videos from their Google Photos using descriptive and natural language. This has been made possible with Google’s Gemini AI models that can now search for specific scenes, situations, or kinds of photos to deliver relevant results.

Ask Photos Feature Is Now Live in the US

Ask Photos is an advanced search capability that will let the users navigate through their Photos catalog more conversationally. The feature is based on standard keyword-based searches that Google Photos provides for years. You can ask complex questions or describe scenes or situations to search for specific photographs.

For example, I have over two thousand photos in the Google Photos app and if I have to make a collage of Rakhi celebrations over the years, all I have to type is ‘Me tying rakhi to my brother’ and the feature will sort all the images in which I am celebrating the festival. My searches can also include ‘me with my siblings’ or ‘me with my grandparents’ and the feature will sort these out for me. This feature makes it simple to look through enormous photo collections to look for exactly what they want.

The feature uses Gemini AI models to understand the context of your images and what they contain. It can identify important elements in the photo and thus answer your queries with relevant photos. More specific details can be added to your search to make it for effective.

When the feature is enabled, the last tab in the Google Photos app will become ‘Ask’ with a bottom search bar to let you enter a query. There is a Gemini logo as well which takes a few moments to load the results after the search is initiated.

Google has also assured that Google Photos are never used for advertisements and is protected by industry-leading security measures. Besides early access, one will also be able to sign up for waitlist access to the feature.
